I think keeping a vehicle until it dies will become the norm. Why wasn't it already? It's not like vehicles became overly complex overnight. I have a 2003 Yukon Denali with 184K bought in 2008 with 66K, 2005 Bonneville with 115K bought with 80K, a 2009 Saturn Vue with 148K bought with 135K, a 2007 Sierra with 181K bought with 77K, and a 2014 Chevy Equinox I got for free at 171K that has a 177K now. They're all paid for. Out of those five, I financed the Yukon for 5 years and paid the bank off in three. Financed the Sierra from my Dad on a three year but paid him off in one. The other three were cash. Between houses and autos, I don't see how younger folks can afford to accumulate anything. They will never be out of debt if they have to finance everything for a long time. 40 year mortgages and 10 year car loans will probably be the result. It's a bad trap. 40 year mortgages and 10 year car notes are already the norm. I have one more kid to buy for in the next two years and I will consider replacing my wife's Yukon. She has been driving it for 15 years and it was five years old when I got it. The dealerships deserve every bit that's coming at them. The manufacturer should take by far the greatest blame. Dealers are just franchises. This isnt the case for everyone, but when you drive close to 30k miles a year, you cant keep a vehicle reliably running for 15 years.

Seeing ads on tv now claiming $10k below MSRP. Don't remember details as I'm not in the market to buy.

I hope they are suffering. I really needed to buy a new truck this year (250k miles on my 1/2ton) but refused to pay what they want for one. My solution was, I bought a low mileage used car to drive when I don't need my truck, and will continue to feed the truck parts as needed. I know the bubble will burst at some point, but now I'm locked into this plan for three years at least. They deserve everything they get.

In general I think it is a lot easier to physically do than people think. It is the mental of I want something new and keeping up with the joneses that needs a new one. Maintenance becomes more important the longer you want to keep it.

I'm in the same boat. 8.5 year old F150 on bought new with 230,000 miles. Prices look better this year but figure I can keep this one going until prices come down hopefully another 10% and Ford puts out some good APR incentives.
Looked at getting a commuter car but with vehicle plus insurance cost doesn't make much sense.

I save miles by having two half tons. One old tundra for hauling crap and hunting.....one newer one for work/appearances.

I hear ya, this is the "commuter car" I bought. It does get better mileage than my pickup, and it's a whole lot more fun to drive.

My Ford is 2011. I've been thinking along these lines for 20 years now... Buy em used but clean and drive them for years and years. The less technology the better.

My Tundra is an 07, with 190k miles. Runs great. A relatively simple vehicle, compared to new trucks and cars. I just can’t make myself want a new one. They are sort of ugly and have all sorts of bothersome technology. The wife’s Lexus has some bothersome crap going on, and the Mercedes Sprinter Van is just too darned complicated. You can shut some of it off once you get going, but next time you start it, all that complication fires up again. It really does impact my stress level in a negative fashion.

I have a 2015 Tundra. I like it. The new ones are butt-ugly.

For the last several years I’ve been driving a 1/2 ton diesel. Still does truck stuff but gets small crosover mpg commuting. I’m probably about to dump the truck for a decent condition gas HD truck as I kept my wife’s last car as a commuter. Miles don’t bother me as long as I know maintenance has been done.

O9 silverado with 200k I replaced the transmission, but would rather do that then buy a new truck.

I have a little over 200,000 miles on a GMC 1500. I have already decided that when the transmission or engine lets go I will be rebuilding it. For $10,000 I can rebuild the transmission and put in a new engine and go another 100,000 miles. Mind you, this is a truck I only use for hunting and towing and I have a separate company truck for daily use.
