You know, all this horn hunter vs. meat hunter stuff is useless. Me personally, I love big bucks, I'm obsessed with them, obsessed with waiting on them to grow up, obsessed with watching the whole process. That may make me a horn hunter to some of you, and I guess I'm fine with that, but my freezer full of venison would tend to contradict that, as would my family's menu. Just because I like big bucks doesn't mean I don't pop doe, spikes, and whatever else needs to go. I just don't get the need for distinctions I guess.
To the original question...don't leave it out there, call me, I will bring my dogs, they will find it, and I will help you drag it back to the truck. I will even help you cut it up if you need the help...

leaving a deer or any animal is the sorriest thing a person can do. They should not be allowed to hunt anymore if caught or one hell of a fine at least. I would kick some one off my lease if i seen that done.
do your best to find it, no matter the circumstance.

Surely no one leaves one on purpose.... really? I hope the OP meant.... bow shot at dusk, waited a while, tracked till midnight, evidence of trail but deer is moving, etc.... then found in the morning...
I have helped recover a few of those scenarios, and yes usually in cold weather its OK and usually in warm weather its not... and in our cases about 1 in 3 are found by varmints and ants before we find them...

Leaving deer over night because your are lazy or incompetant is unacceptable in my mind. However if you exert adequate effort towards recovering that animal and are unable to locate it then finding it the next day is fine. Yes the weather needs to be cool but heck they are warm when you shoot them.

I will even help you cut it up if you need the help... Yeah, well Curly, the guy that brought up the whole "I'm a meat hunter" has posted multiple pictures of bucks on his wall... We all know if there was a bona fide trophy, 7.5 years old, and run down after the rut, and a fat juicy doe standing next to each other, he would shoot the trophy. I would too, but I don't get on here and talk about how I'm a meat hunter only. I shoot it, I eat it. I also will pass to shoot a bigger buck.

I've been fortunate in that I've never had to leave one overnight to find the next day. I have, however, taken several hours in the middle of the day to find one. When I found him, I shot a coyote off of him, and his entire hind quarters were gone to the bone (both sides).
