I found a doe that had been left over night in 4 degree weather...It still had a strong smell. The sooner the internal organs can be removed the better...IMO I agree with you 100% on that. Also this is my .02: People that hate AR restrictions are meat hunters People that are for AR restrictions horn hunters Just my opinion

I'm more of a meat hunter and i like the taste of game.If i ran into a buck then that's fine,if it is a doe then that's fine to.I dont have a problem with either one. Most of those hunting shows are for selling hunts or products anyway.
Not all those that wander are lost..

this is the reason why i no longer get sausage processed...most, if not all processors, wait and smoke a large batch of venison at once...long story longer, you never get YOUR meat in return...the sausage is likely the hunters who could afford to get the entire deer processed into sausage or jerky, most hunters see that tv shows leave deer overnight and do the same...not realizing that the show may be filmed up north..thus i get basic cuts processed, in return i get MY venison back, plus i found out is also fun to make your own sausage, lots of work but fun...

Last year I shot a doe with an arrow. I was able to see the entrance, and--when she spun around--the exit. Looked like a perfect shot on a quartering away deer. Short version, myself and three other hunters tried for hours (darkness, by then) trying to blood trail her. We finally just could not find another drop of blood, or any other sign. We resumed the search the next morning and finally found her. After seeing the shot placement the other hunters named her "Super-Doe" because she should never have been able to have traveled that far (Almost 500 yards). She tasted great. The temperature was cold, and she wasn't gut shot. This is my long way of agreeing with the first response here...the deer meat will be fine as long as the temp. is low over night. Whether or not other animals beat you to is is another story.

I'd track all night and just about have before I let athe yotes have it. Yes, I'll admit it was a bad shot "gut shot", but I found it. It just took awhile.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Unless the temps were dog cold, I wouldn't eat the meat. Biggest problem around the southern panhandle would not necessarily be temps but the coyotes that find your deer and eat on the carcass.
Over the past two days, I saw shows on TV that 1) bowhunting and the deer ran off. The hunter moved in on the deer, bumped the buck and he ran off again. Waited over night and found the carcass after the coyotes feasted on it. 2) I saw a hunter on a show yesterday that shot a buck from behind through the hindquarter. You know it ruined the meat but clearly he didn't care, he was only after the horns.
Personally, I believe we should do all we can to not waste meat. That being said, everyone could have this easily happen to them.
Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

depends on temp and coyotes. when I was up north we'd leave a field dressed deer hanging for a week if we had to if it was cold enough to keep it frozen.

A lot of factors here. In respect for the animal, when in doubt, back out. I shot a deer 5 yrs ago. Just a tad back. We found where it laid up. It was already 5 hrs after the shot. So we backed out. It dropped to 14 degrees that morning. I went back at 8am, and about an hr later, I found it. One of the best eatin deer I ever ate. Three yrs ago, my brother took his pastor. He shot at a deer right at dark. He didn't know if he hit it or not. Brother found some small drops of blood. He decided to wait so we went and ate supper. Came back after a hr and got back on the blood trail. Finally found the deer but yotes had already ate the whole backend. Just a lot depends on temps, shot placement, and your surrounding enviroment to let it lay or not.

I have backed off a few times and found the deer the next morning, some were in fifty degree weather and they were fine. Fresh meat takes longer to turn then most would think. When I was a kid it was a standard practice to hang the deer a few days. Guted of course but with the hide still on.Old timers would pour black pepper all over it to keep flies off.

I know what your saying. Nothing against ya'll bow hunters, but bowhunters tell me that an arrow hitting the deer is like the impact of a 30-06. When I shoot a deer with my 30-06 it dosent run for a couple hundred yards. Kinda cruel to me.

If the temp is right it doesn't hurt a thing. I have put more than one in the freezer that was left overnight. It is better to give one time than to push it. If you shoot enough deer sooner or later your shot won't be perfect. If I am not sure about a shot and it is getting dark I'll leave em everytime as long as the temp is going to be in the 50's or below. Even when I find a deer it will hang over night if the temp is low.

I will track a deer day and night to recover it. I don't give a flip about hogs. I hate hogs just that much.

Late one season the landowners wife decided she really needed another doe. I shot about as late as I ever have and it the doe in the lungs. I trailed it as far as possible (100 yards)with no light. It was cold so I decided to just go back in the morning. The next morning I found it about 10 yards further out. It was buried with leaves and sticks there there were some cat prints bigger than my palm. Since I did not have a gun with me (stupid) I backed out and just let the cat have it. When I saw the covered deer and the fresh cat tracks the hair on by neck definitely stood up. The ranch I was hunting was over loaded with does so I did not feel too bad about it.

Like Sig says it depends on where the wound is. A gut shot deer is not pretty the next morning. If it was cold enough I would skin and quarter without gutting. The loins just get sacrificed.

Seen a lot of hunting shows where the hunters return to get the deer the next day after killing it.
Wouldn't the meat be spoiled by then? It all depends on 2 things - temperature and how the animal was killed. A gut shot animal is certainly going to taint the meat - I dont care what the temp is - an animal that has died will still have enough of a body temp to promote bad bacteria growth. With gut shot you need to recover the animal asap. Now having said all that, a properly killed animal (lung, heart, etc) that is field dressed quickly and hung up can actually be hung in 45 degree weather for up to 24 hours before hitting the icebox (even before skinning). Anything hotter that 45 you should skin the deer. Dry aging deer - the practice of allowing a skinned deer to hang for up to a week - allows for natural occuring (good) bacteria to grow that breaks downs the tissue and makes the meat more tender. This is exactly the same procedure high dollar restaurants use. I always let my deer age at least 24 hours before sending to the cooler. If it going to be above 45 anytime at all i will skin, if below 45 I will hang as is. Something else, if there is to be prolonged freeze - get your deer into a processor or cooler asap. this is much worse for the meat.
