6 dead so far, sad deal. Read people were jumping into the ocean in downtown to avoid the fires.

My wife has a huge family on the island (her mom grew up there). She lives in Texas now and has (had?) a house in Lahaina on the south end of Front Street. We assumed it was gone but just confirmed about an hour ago after finding some aerial images online.

We actually were there exactly a month ago visiting family… spent a day in Lahaina and on the West Side… hard to believe it’s gone!

There’s some hope that the tree will survive. Several of its shoots burned, and the main trunk and a good bit of the cover is still there. I hope it survives.

My sister had one of the old plantation crew support houses in Lahaina for 20 years before she passed away. An interesting ramshackle old place with two small bedrooms and a 40' long combination kitchen/eating area. My Dad lived there for two years before he passed at 96 yrs.

Absolutely nothing left of it now.

I think the death toll in Lahaina will be much higher than what’s currently being reported. That fire spread quick, and there are lots of folks who physically couldn’t evacuate quickly or are/were too stubborn to leave when the fire came through.

The AP is reporting at least 36 people have been killed so far. And 271 structures were damaged or destroyed. So tragic.

The Marina pictured above is/was, pure history, such a cool little strip of shops. Last time there was 1990ish.

Looked like all those beautiful, huge, pine trees burned at Kapalua.

It’s so heartbreaking. My mother in law shared this tonight. Her house was built in the early 1900’s. frown
