6 dead so far, sad deal. Read people were jumping into the ocean in downtown to avoid the fires.

My wife has a huge family on the island (her mom grew up there). She lives in Texas now and has (had?) a house in Lahaina on the south end of Front Street. We assumed it was gone but just confirmed about an hour ago after finding some aerial images online.
We actually were there exactly a month ago visiting family… spent a day in Lahaina and on the West Side… hard to believe it’s gone!
That one lone house must belong to Biden, untouchable..

There’s some hope that the tree will survive. Several of its shoots burned, and the main trunk and a good bit of the cover is still there. I hope it survives.

Tragic, prayers for the folks on the island. Before and after.

My sister had one of the old plantation crew support houses in Lahaina for 20 years before she passed away. An interesting ramshackle old place with two small bedrooms and a 40' long combination kitchen/eating area. My Dad lived there for two years before he passed at 96 yrs.
Absolutely nothing left of it now.

I think the death toll in Lahaina will be much higher than what’s currently being reported. That fire spread quick, and there are lots of folks who physically couldn’t evacuate quickly or are/were too stubborn to leave when the fire came through.

That's terrible, such a beautiful place...we spent our 10th anniversary there in a condo just off Front street on the beach and was actually thinking about going back to the same place for our 25th next year. prayers for the town and all of the people affected

The AP is reporting at least 36 people have been killed so far. And 271 structures were damaged or destroyed. So tragic.

The Marina pictured above is/was, pure history, such a cool little strip of shops. Last time there was 1990ish.
Looked like all those beautiful, huge, pine trees burned at Kapalua.

It’s so heartbreaking. My mother in law shared this tonight. Her house was built in the early 1900’s.

Their efforts equated to purposely adding more fuel to areas where prescribed burning to prevent such a disaster was not an option.

just watch, the state will condemn and seize lands now.... In 60 days it will start filtering out of the fringe media how locals lost their land to developers etc.
no such thing as a wild fire accident on an island…

The HI governor has already said they plan to take some of the land. "Developers" are already swarming making offers.
This was NOT an accident. This was a holdout of mainly HI natives in that area of the city - who had resisted the "developers" and weren't selling.

Re: Lahina Burned down - 08/15/23 02:38 PM
Y’all are delusional if you honestly think the fire was intentional to grab land.
With that said, I 100% agree that cash hungry investors & developers are chomping at the bit to get a piece of that Maui tourism revenue. It’s sad. My MIL wants to rebuild and preserve the history as best as she can. It will be interesting to watch the process play out … jumping through the local government hoops for getting contraction permits is usually a long process (it took her almost 2 years to remodel the house starting in 2019).

Same speculation starts here after each and every flood. 90 days after, the value of the land is more than prior to to each flood.

My friends sister and her wife live on the interior of the island on I believe a 30 acre plot and he worked out there as a general contractor for a couple of years. He said outside of the tourist areas the island is an absolute S hole that is pretty but populated by overly aggressive meth head ethnic Polynesians that would freak out on him over him taking work away from so-called natives but none of the natives would do the work he was doing and they would vandalize his job sites, his truck, and his equipment. He said that he never plans on going back even though there's a pile of money to be made right now.

Overall I don’t think the island is a s hole, but that is absolutely occurring like you said especially upcountry and on the north side. One of my wife’s aunts had a small off the grid homestead far upcountry, and even though she’s a local and has lived on the island her entire life, she was constantly harassed as an invader just because she’s haole (white). She lost her home a year or so ago due to a suspicious fire that started while she was away at work … lost everything including her dogs. No cause was ever determined (police weren’t interested in investigating it).

My friend is married to a woman and he lives in Satellite Beach Florida. His sister is also married to a woman and she lives in Hawaii with her wife. I've never met her or her wife.
