Bass Pro Grapevine has a new Ruger made Marlin 336. List $1049. Sure is nice. A little rich for me and surprised they had it.
If anyone is looking you should probably move fast.

Folk gotta face it. It was a low priced working man’s rifle. They aren’t worth what is being asked now…Period.
The ammo is no longer readily available on every shelf, it’s ballistics are not swuft, and accuracy ain’t all there.
Every one of you here remember when it carried a pawn shop price of $160 and walmart was slam full of ammo.
And I’m a lever fanatic

$1000 for a lever action is comical I get it and wouldn’t even consider it. Although people, no one I know, are buying them.

I’m sure the quality is better but that’s a hard sell for me still.

I have my JM stamped 336 from 1974 and my Dad's Winchester 94 from 1950, both are safe queens. Very nice guns but for shooting and hunting there are much better calibers.

And I’m a lever fanatic Scarcity. What was once low priced and readily available firearm was taken away then reintroduced as limited product at a premium price. I do think the new Ruger Marlins carry much nicer wood and bluing than previous models. For a long time my dads only rifle was a Glenfield 336 with a cheap 4x scope that he bought from K-Mart. Low priced, good enough for 50-75 yard feeder shots and it was easy to shoot. It was the Remington 870 express of the rifle world. When I was a kid, lots of kids got them as their first rifles. My guess why is because they were cheap, because they make lousy kids rifles

I will probably buy one of the Ruger-Marlin’s. Price is at or below what a clean used one is selling for today. If Ruger’s track record is any indication, their quality control will be on top of what they produce. Maybe someone that knows history can tell us if the 30WCF is the first smokeless powder rifle cartridge that was produced for the masses.

30WCF was black powder, right?. .30-30 Win (same thing really) is smokeless.
Same goes for .32WCF versus .32-20 and all the others like it.
My Waffle Top isn't leaving home for a measly $1000 nor would I buy a new one for four digits ... no matter the cartridge.
Pass the gravy.

Per my research 30-30 was the first cartridge designed for and exclusively loaded with smokeless powder. Winchester called it the 30 Winchester Smokeless. Introduced in 1895. Headstamp was “30 WCF” for Winchester Center Fire. Marlin immediately chambered lever guns in 30 WCF but did not want to give Winchester free advertising. They called it 30-30. (30 caliber and 30 grains of smokeless powder). 30-30 stuck.

Nice! Thanks for actually looking it up. I thought it was 30 caliber and 30 grains of black powder since the the .30-20 was .32 caliber and 20 grains black powder ... and Colt didn't want to put Winchester's name on their pistols and rifles.
Pass the gravy.

For that price, it would be good to be chambered in .308 Win.
But, there are people stupid enough to load hollow point, or FMJ bullets in a tube magazine.

I had a 336T in 35 Remington. Dad bought 336s for himself and us two sons, and I think the cost was $68 each in 1962 or 1963. It was a great short range deer caliber, but limited to 150 to 200 yards. That pushed me to my first 270. I wish I had my old 336T back, but would not spend $1000+ for a new one.

$1000 for a lever action is comical Much like $400 for a cooler. Except there are still $100 (new) coolers? Are there still $250 (new) lever actions?

I bought a new Marlin 1895 SBL last year. The MSRP, I believe, was $1395. Now $1479. To those saying these prices are ridiculous and that you paid some super cheap price decades ago... that was decades ago. I have a brand new rifle that was made to a higher standard. And your old rifle, now selling used, may not be priced much different.
Or maybe I got ripped off. You decide. We know what I decided. And that's to get a new gun and support the gun industry.
RevolverFan also mentioned revolvers. I bought my first last year. I think MSRP was around $900. Maybe I got screwed again. Though I supported the gun industry.
My botnet is bigger than yours.

Texans (336T) were almost $90 new. That's $90 instead of $60, just like today ... $900 instead of $600 in modern dollars. So it's about the same as always if you add a little greater inflation. The Texans in decent shape are worth about $1000 now because they were a special model.
Pass the gravy.
