I bought my savage 93 about a month ago and my dad liked mine so much he went and bought one the next day. lol imo the 17hmr is one of the best calibers ever made.

I rather have a .17gr Vmax than a .40gr hollow point. I can put that Vmax anywhere I want to out to 200yds..

For the most part, the .22mag is less expensive to shoot...anywhere from $3.00-$4.00 difference in price. The .17 will give you greater accuracy at a longer range than the .22mag.
Not necessarily. If you compare the vmaxes, ie premium bullets, then the 17 is cheaper than the 22 by a few bucks.

I had the Marlin 983SS in .22WMR, and it was a sweet shooter. Gave it to my best friend, and he loves the thing. I gained possession of a 917SS heavy barrel in .17 when my son moved to Alaska - couldn't take the thing through Canada, and was already shipping a bunch of other guns. Slapped a 3~9x40 Simmons Master Series on it ($24 from Sportsmansguide), and it's a tack driver... unless a squirrel farts across the bullet's path. The little bullets don't like wind. At all. .22WMR wasn't quite as sensitive.
All told, I'd probably prefer the .22WMR for anything much bigger than a coon.

I have both. Last week I finally tried it out on some jackrabbits. My longest shot was at 125 yards. The rabbitt was sitting, facing away from me. The shot went in his lower back, up the front(gutted him) and out the lower jaw. It took the lower jaw out as it exited. This jack went about 50 yards and was still going(making an awful sound), and I shot it 2 more times. One thing about the 17, it left really tiny entrance holes, with almost no blood ect. The exits were a little bigger. The other kicker was I shot most of the jacks 2-3 times to finish them off, even the dismembered jack was shot 3 times. BTW I use the Hornady V Max

If you can afford both, this is great advice.
