I love learning new stuff about deer - never heard of an ednema but in this case it makes sense

I'm on board with this. His face looks young for sure, and not really seeing any arthritic looks in his knees. Given the range conditions, a lot of deer are looking healthy this year.

He's a dandy for sure! cheers

I would say on my LF lease he is a shooter for sure, and older rather than younger. For me, a deer that age is mature. Age could be anywhere from 5.5-7.5, but he is mature. He is in no way less than 4.5, although I am not sure if that helps you.

What is the age criteria you are looking to shoot?

we are minimum of 6.5 - most we take are over that - no matter what a rack looks like we do not kill till 6.5 or older

Ok, so let's say you and some lease members determine this guy is 6.5 and you or someone else shoot him. What happens if he is determined to be 5.5 by someone else?

Also, what is the definitive method your lease uses to determine age?

The way you answer these questions will be the judge on whether this deer should be shot or wait another year.

if he is called mature (6.5) and he turns out to be younger there is no issue with the hunter - but we are very conservative and if there is any question at all we pass until next year - our history shows that overall when we pass on a deer we are not certain on then good things happen

I think you answered yourself then, pass for next year or the year after even.

I agree with everything said on here, don't know what is causing the edema (another name for swelling) but it could simply be he lost quite a bit of weight over the rut and is wore down.

Good buck regardless. Look forward to seeing him ground checked in the coming years

I would say 4.5. No way he's 6.5, saggy brisket or not.

I think 3.5. Only way to tell more is to shoot him and check his teeth.

Maybe he isn't 6 but I think young is the wrong descriptor perhaps.

I agree brisket looks like it may have a thorn or something in it, jiggles like an old cow.

If he walked out in front of me this weekend , that's as mature as he'd ever get.

I couldn't make out callouses, but they sure do look swollen/knoby to me.

Tim,
I have a buck on my lease with a very similar body condition (-20" antler), with the same brisket scenario but have a little more history on the deer. I'm pretty sure the deer I have is a 5 yr old based on what we knew of him last year. In early oct. this year he showed up with a large swollen abcess between his front legs with swelling that carried up his lower neck slightly. This swollen area ruptured and began to slowly diminish about 2 weeks later. He still has some swagger in his brisket similar to the deer in your video but it seems to be slowly disappearing, however he is also now bulking up in his neck region as are the other mature bucks.
It very well may be the deer in your video encountered a similar situation (snakebite, thorn, ??).
I would disregard the abnormal appearing brisket and age him based on other characteristics. He looks 5 ish to me but at the very end of the video I noticed he may have had a little loose skin under his jaw however this could still be attributed to the brisket condition and lymph response.

He's old. Look at that brisket.

If there is something weird/wrong with his brisket, shoot him anyway.

Not sure on the time the video was taken, but his hocks look fairly dry to me. This late in the game an older buck's will be dark way down his legs. IMO

But a very nice buck fho sho!

thanks for info - our group has decided that is the case with this deer. The brisket appears swollen from infection - rest of deer does not appear mature (6 or older for us) - we will track him next year and determine if we think he is 6 at that point)

You can't fix stupid
