we got video of this guy. His head looks young but brisket shakes like an old guy. Our deer are very large and very fat right now so that has to be accounted for. What age do you think? We have never seen this deer before so we are in debate on our lease as to his age -

That's a really hard one. I see the young head for sure, but that brisket looks older than Moses, and he has a fairly flat/low stomach line. Do you know his age? I know you guys really manager, I think you're holding out on us! cheers He's either <= 4.5 or really old, but I'm leaning towards the young side.

we have never seen this buck before so not holding out - we have some of our very experienced members saying age 6 and others saying 4 - it is a very tough call - I have watched the video multiple times and still unsure

Something is making him way fat. It's crazy how much he is carrying in his brisket.

all our deer are very fat - range conditions were perfect all year and we feed lots of protein and cottonseed - but I have not seen a young deer have a brisket that shakes that much - but his head, stomach, and back look like a younger buck - totally stumped on this one

He is rutted down a little, giving the sway to the brisket. His knees are pretty knobby but he doesn't have that sway to the back or the blocky head associated with age. Having said that, he may not get too blocky in the head due to his antler structure, he is going to ward off a lot of head blows with that rack.

I would say on my LF lease he is a shooter for sure, and older rather than younger. For me, a deer that age is mature. Age could be anywhere from 5.5-7.5, but he is mature. He is in no way less than 4.5, although I am not sure if that helps you.

What is the age criteria you are looking to shoot?

This is a tough one no doubt. I have to lean toward him being mature, brisket is definitely that of a mature deer. Solid deer either way!

we are minimum of 6.5 - most we take are over that - no matter what a rack looks like we do not kill till 6.5 or older

I think he is a shooter if y'all hold out for 6.5+ on your lease.

That sway/jiggle makes me think of an old man that maybe lost weight and has a bunch of loose skin around the collar.

Ok, so let's say you and some lease members determine this guy is 6.5 and you or someone else shoot him. What happens if he is determined to be 5.5 by someone else?

Also, what is the definitive method your lease uses to determine age?

The way you answer these questions will be the judge on whether this deer should be shot or wait another year.

That's a nice one, looks mature to my eyes.

Mature buck 5.5 maybe 6.5 leaning towards 5.5 more so a shooter buck for what he is.

I think he's definitely 6.5, probably older to be completely honest. I think he's one of those bucks that's either 8+ or 4.5 by the looks of him, but I think this guy is old and maybe even on the downhill side of development. I'd shoot him this season.

if he is called mature (6.5) and he turns out to be younger there is no issue with the hunter - but we are very conservative and if there is any question at all we pass until next year - our history shows that overall when we pass on a deer we are not certain on then good things happen

We also check teeth after shot of course and send teeth to lab for aging - we rarely kill one under 6 and most of the time they end up being 7 - we have already decided not to shoot this buck because we are not certain he is 6 or older

a respected hunter/friend thinks this deer has an edema - an injury that causes his brisket to swell and fill with fluid - that is what is causing the neck to look so different - all the other indicators of head, back and belly show him to be young

I love learning new stuff about deer - never heard of an ednema but in this case it makes sense

I agree. That brisket is not normal.

If you look past the brisket, everything else indicates young. Still pretty lengthy in the legs, and nice little head, but he is a nice buck what ever age he is.

I think he's 5.5 and worn down from knocking boots. Great looking buck.

TLK I agree with your friend

My thought as I watched the video, the brisket Is large and moves quite a bit but most indicators look like a less than 6 year old to me. Another good looking buck.
