Not news to anyone that raises elk... We changed every other feeder to a welded 2"x4" panel but didn't make time for this one because the varmint cage was new last season.

They are hard on the equipment without a doubt! Maybe it's time for a 180 grain attitude adjustment.

"It is the same boiling water that softens the rice, which hardens the egg." It's not always about the circumstances, but what you are made of....

I had the same problem. Now I run 11 feeders and no problems in 2 years. It will cost you $25 or less. Take a cattle panel and hold it across two legs of your feeder just under the barrel. Then use bolt cutters to cut panel to match the shape of your feeder legs. Cut your panel long on both ends so you can use big pliers to bend the panel around the legs. I also put wire on to double secure it to the legs because I was really tired of fixing the feeder. Repeat all of this around all the legs. I also left the varmint cage on for the coons. You will have to cut a square out of the panel to open the varmint cage and access timer. It took about 45 minutes but it has lasted 2 years. Before, I was repairing 2 feedersa week. Send me a text request for a photo and I will send it.254-625-2227... while I figured out how to out smart the elk, I can't figure out how to post a picture here.

Thanks for the info Double K; the picture below was my answer for both the elk and the raccoons bending the cheap cages available commercially; also using eliminator spin plates for the coons. That is 2"x4" horse panel fully welded to the bottom of the barrel with a hinged door on the front. So far so good but if the elk get past my fix I may be hitting you up for some pictures!

DC rancher, I believe that is going to work. It's the same principle as what I have done except I went around the legs of the feeder. Varmint cages are just too flemsey. Good Luck.
