That doesn't appear to be a fresh water trout. I looks like a juvenile spotted sea trout. I have caught hundreds of them in the Gulf over the years.

How far inland is the pond. If close to the coast then salt water percolates through the sand to inland fresh water ponds. If far inland it may be a pond located over a salt dome or deposit. The question is how did the trout get there. Probably stocked.

That explains it. Ike probably brought the fish fry and eggs to the pond as well.

I agree with Geezer on this... but begs the question. Do salt water regulations apply? If so that fish is under 15' and should have been released.

Private pond there are no "regulations". Guess you're correct there. But might be a very interesting conversation with the game warden. "You caught a mess of undersized specks from a private pond?"

we did release them all three. There are four ponds in all, and this one is the only one that is salt water.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

That is 70 miles north of Nueces Bay as the crow flies. We dug a tank about 1/4 from that location and at 12' deep it started to seep saltwater. Same thing in in Eastern La Salle County. We dug a couple of tanks along Quintana Creek on drainages feeding it and at 14' or so they started to seep saltwater. That was 90 miles west of Nueces Bay. We had areas along the creek that grew nothing at all due to all the salt in the soil.

They stock redfish in fresh water lakes that survive just fine. From my understanding its the same red as at the coast. They used to stock corvina, which are a hybrid somewhat similar to specks. Sharks go up rivers etc. It may not be salt water in the tank. In brackish water I think they mix somewhat regularly. Bet they got their in the hurricane and will do fine weather it is fresh or saltwater. They may not spawn though.

Never an animal track around the holes in the creeks. Had flats that look like white salt on the neighbors ranch that was a couple of hundred acres.

Trout need higher salinity to survive than species like redfish and bull sharks

They thrive in brackish, see a lot of them (and reds) around the salt water barriers that are way further inland. The ones that have lived their entire life in it aren't as prone to dying as the concentration shifts more toward fresh from rains.

Hope the corps of engineers doesn't see this... We had our freshwater reservoir flood after Ike and was filled with redfish and trout. We would literally catch 150-200 fish a day. Well the corps of engineers came in and said we had two drain it or it'd be labeled as a saltwater wetland and no improvements or drilling could be done. They came in and cut our levys and all the fish were gone

Not near as hardy as its scaled family members imo. Reds are nothing but a saltwater version of the goo. I just didn't think there would be that much salt that far north.. pretty cool
