M&P9, New, not an older one. Certified used Sig 226 or New 2022. Glock, CZ 75, Beretta 92, Lionheart...

Back to original post, you seem to be looking for a plinker. My thought would be a Ruger P95, made in USA, goes bang every time, magazines available at decent price, super dependable.

Glocks are great, SW SD9 is a great gun, also love the SW M&P line and those are under 600.
I would get the SW SD9 and spend the rest on ammo/reloading material. Gun shoots great and will last a life time. Otherwise, you could always go the glock route. If you buy a used Gen 1,2,3 glock and send it into the factory they will update all the parts to Gen 4 for free. They only update internal parts, they will not add back straps or anything, customer just pays for shipping.

Man guns are like shoes, what are comfortable to some don't work for others. It's good to get ideas from a forum and on the internet in general. But then go to a gun store and handle the guns and dry fire the triggers. You'll be able to narrow a long list down to a few guns really quickly.
And I'm a big proponent of buying from the store that took all the time to show you the guns and answer your questions. I understand going somewhere else if they're $100 higher than everyone else, but pay the man the extra $30 for helping you out. His help could have prevented you from making a $500 mistake (or however much your gun costs). And to clarify I don't own a gun store, or any store for that matter, and don't and have never worked at one.

I used to own a SD40VE. I only sold it because I needed $, otherwise, I would not have sold it. The trigger is heavy, but it did serve it's purpose as a DA trigger. For the money, yes it is a good gun IMO. That said, there are many other good guns out there that would fit in your $600 budget as well. Go fondle as many guns as you can, then make a decision.

Appreciate all the feedback, guys. I have now looked at the M&P, the SD9, Glock 17 &19, the sig 2022. My brother in law has an older Sigma that ill get to shoot this weekend but I think right now I may have to shoot them all before I make the decision.

Ruger SR9. Ruger has came a long way in pistols since the P series. I got my SR9 for $399 but I'm pretty sure they've went up $20-30. Accurate and reliable. Mine did fail to eject once on cheap ammo after about 2500 rounds uncleaned. I gave it a couple of drops of oil and I'm back in business.

I bought a brand new Beretta M9A1 for $500. I have a CZ75 as well and prefer the trigger on the Beretta by far, although I do like how the CZ shoots.

If you get a chance, break down a Gen 3 Glock and a SD9 and close your eyes. Bet you cant tell which is which.

Really hard to go wrong with an SR9 this. about the slimmest double stack out there. a glock feels like a 2x4 compared to the ruger
