my vote would be .243 for an all around texas gun. 30-06 for all around north american gun.

If God had thought the 30-06 was the best overall cartridge, he wouldn't have created the .270. well, thats good, because HE didnt....but winchester did.

Not many have actually answered the question; he asked what's the best rifle, not caliber.
Call me old fashioned but I think a Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 is hard to beat. Control feed, claw extractor, steel trigger guard and floorplate, great trigger, and perhaps one of the best safety designs. Also, their looks are pretty too.
Perhaps some evidence to support this are the premium prices these rifles bring today.
A close second for me would be a 1950's/60's FN Commercial Mauser.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested a .375
You can't hunt elephant with a .243

Some might not like this but For central and east texas a good old Marlin 336 30-30 with 170 grain rounds works wonders. West texas leads to greater possible ranges and the 30-30 may not be the perfect gun. The 30-30 is good on out to 200 yards and dosent damage the hides. And the side eject Marlin always appealed to me best. Just my 2 cents

And I guess i could be a little bit more specific also... I'm looking for a rifle that can be slung over a shoulder and carried out on a hunt where i wouldn't have any doubt that the rifle could take the shot and keep the hide clean on anything i see. And i don't plan on hunting anything bigger than a big buck or big hog. And the smallest probably being a coyote, javelina, or bobcat. And to really get specific, something that is:
1)Reliable
2)Good reputation for quality and accuracy
3)Relatively easy maintenance and cleaning
4)Widespread availability of compatible ammo
5)Durable under a number of different conditions and usage.
Not sure if it will or not, but hopefully that can help come to the right caliber and narrow things down a little bit. I'm just trying to make the best decision possible for this and making sure i wont regret it later on. Thanks for the time and all the help!!
I know when I post this that everyone will disagree. You said reliable, reputation for accuracy, widespread ammo, and durable. Mine is a 7 mm Rem Mag Model 700 Classic. It shoots a quarter inch group at 100. I have killed everything from jackrabbits to 450 pound plus hogs with it. It's light as all get out, I can carry it all day and not get tired, it was made in the 60's and I have never had a problem with it. Shot a coyote with it the other day at 150 yards. 140 grain Sierra Soft Point Boattail. Exit was barely twice the size of the entrance but bloody I will admit. You can load up a lot sorts of bullet weights and can take down anything in Texas, including West Texas Elk. But like I said, I know no one will agree with this.

.308 or 30.06 and handload .22 cal 55 grain accelerators. JMO
