What would be the best rifle that y'all recommend using for almost all hunts? I'm mainly just looking for something that wont tear apart a bobcat, or coyote, but yet strong enough to take down a good hog or big buck. Not sure if there is anything out there like that, but just curious. I was told a .308 fits this best?

Not sure a .308 wont blow a varmit apart. Maybe if you use copper bullets that dont expand, then maybe it'll just pass straight through.

Your post will open a can of worms here.

My take is also the .308 Win. For what I do it's not "the" best cartridge. But I trust it to take care of any situation I could think of. But it will tear up a bobcat.

Finding the best of all worlds would be the .243 or, my pick, the .260 Rem.

Yeah, probably gonna get a lot of different answers. But for what you listed, a one size fits all maybe a .243.

All joking aside I would go with a 257 weatherby

Have a grey fox mounted that was taken with a 7mmSTW at about 25 yards, 160 grain Partition Gold at 3200 fps. Best choice for the OP probably not. But a tough bullet in a deer caliber does not do too that much damage to a smaller critter. Now something like a SST, BT, soft point does a lot of damage from what I have seen on yotes. The yotes I have shot with those bullets with a 7mm-08 I sure would not have bothered saving the hide.

Alright, well with those answers then lets narrow it down a little bit. How bout something that has easy to find and affordable ammo. Where i can go to a local wal-mart and they'll have it. I appreciate all the responses!!

Guess I'd vote for a .243 also. But like others, I could throw a handful more calibers in the mix. Quite a few rounds that could fit the bill.

And I guess i could be a little bit more specific also... I'm looking for a rifle that can be slung over a shoulder and carried out on a hunt where i wouldn't have any doubt that the rifle could take the shot and keep the hide clean on anything i see. And i don't plan on hunting anything bigger than a big buck or big hog. And the smallest probably being a coyote, javelina, or bobcat. And to really get specific, something that is:
1)Reliable
2)Good reputation for quality and accuracy
3)Relatively easy maintenance and cleaning
4)Widespread availability of compatible ammo
5)Durable under a number of different conditions and usage.
Not sure if it will or not, but hopefully that can help come to the right caliber and narrow things down a little bit. I'm just trying to make the best decision possible for this and making sure i wont regret it later on. Thanks for the time and all the help!!

Shot a coyote in the shoulder with my daughters 7mm-08 using standard old remy shells and it nearly separated the thing in 2 pieces. Likewise she shot a hog with the same behind the shoulder and it ran about 15 yards and died. However the bullet passed through and killed a second one in the head. Neat round.

To be determined

Once again .308. Any number of rounds to be found in most places.

nope you need two rifles
308 and a hornet, 221 fireball, or .222

Totally agree. I got a 30/06 and a 22 hornet. Fits nicely any situation I come across.
