Early is better--that way your chances of that creep show with double during Cleaning is missed. A new hunter seeing That- may get turned off.

I shoot a couple during bow season. I may let the kids shoot a couple the last week of November ,since majority of rut is done here then. I don't want to shoot the live decoys now. ....

If you shoot them now you save a buck from covering her. Looking at it from a herd number stand point it doesnt matter when you shoot a doe.

March or April (while the nights are still cool) between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. (jk)
I shoot them late season so they draw in bucks the rest of the time.

Shooting does is an essential part of deer management. The question isn't when but which. As I am trying to manage our property with the impact of the drought I have been reading that only about 50% of does are successful moms. If this is correct than shooting a doe with a fawn or yearling is reducing your successful breeding herd. I am now focused on does that do not have yearlings in tow. By this I hope improve the herd but maintain the successful breeders. This is what we do on my place.

Anytime you have one in front of you is a good time if you have to shoot some. This. I also do my best to try and shoot my does when they are the only thing there so not to educate and bucks more than I have to.
It's hell eatin em live

I cull shot does for ranches for years. Finally they agreed with me and the State Game Biologist that they need to take the numbers period and try and do it prior to the Rut while they are in good shape and before your bucks run themselves down impregnating animals you will harvest. Many ranches try to take old, infirm, or poor quality animals and in doing so prolong the harvest and usually miss their harvest numbers.

I will generally wait til after rut. My thinking is that if I have does during the rut, bucks will come. I like to think it will better my success for a buck harvest. At least that's my thinking.
I try not to shoot does with fawns. I passed on a few during bow season. And I keep getting the same does coming in.

I have always hunted bucks first and does later. But this was mainly because does would be around all the time and "easy" to kill. However as I've gotten older and time seems to be limited, I'll take what i can get (sometimes). It also makes more sense (to me) to shoot them pre-rut then post-rut but sometimes i can't hunt until after Christmas and the rut is (mostly) over.

We have a high fence on one side, neighbors on 2 other sides and they do a lot of shooting. Thus we have few does to be seen....kinda makes you wonder if you should shoot one at all in our case. We usually take one for each hunter. If I were on a place that had a heavy deer population I would shoot them early.

Neither do we at the home place. Not enough deer, yet. Other places I hunt there are enough to shoot.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.

I shoot does when its convenient and not to mess up my other hunting. If one shows up really late in the morning like in the last 30 minutes of my planned hunt then I might just take her. Or better yet, while I am driving back to camp and a big oh doe is standing 50 yards off the road. I'll pop her in the head, get out, tag her, gut her, drag her back to the truck, load her, go to camp and take care of her, and never mess up my actual hunting. And while on this topic, we always make sure to kill one doe for every buck we take off the lease. This really seems to keep our numbers stable.

Before rut - one bird one stone. After rut - two birds one stone. Why in the heck would you throw rocks at em?????? Your tag your freezer, kill em when you want. Post rut pre rut who cares as long as they are in season. You can argue all day about post rut killing two deer by shooting a pregnant doe but hey..... Do you know she's pregnant, is she barren, did she get looked over only to be knocked up during the " second rut" using that insane rule you should never shoot a doe because she may be pregnant if you shoot her before the rut she will probably never get pregnant again so your still killing two deer.. Oh yeah , they ain't unisex either. So if you kill a buck how many deer are you killin. They ain't monogamous you know, they screw everything that's will stand still long enough He'll lets let em all live so we can a whole bunch of babies we should never kill . Shoot a deer when you are good and ready to shoot a deer...... rut be damned

Anytime you have one in front of you is a good time if you have to shoot some. Same goes for cull bucks. Can't tell you how many times I've let one walk thinking I'd let a friend take it. Never to be seen again, that year.

In my county (Harrison)they are only legal the first 2 weeks of the gun season so you better shoot them pre rut or rut.

I will shoot them any time my freezer needs them. I try to do it before or after the rut. but if the chance arises i will squeeze the trigger.
