For some reason all those water snakes (venomous or not) are grumpier than Paula Deen watching BET. bolt

It's all in the head.

Pit vipers (like WMs) have a triangular shaped head. Other snakes do not. The only poisonous snake native to North America that is not a pit viper is a coral snake. The others (WM, copperheads, and rattlesnakes) are pit vipers with a triangular shaped head.

That is not a WM.

Pretty simple if you are from east of 45, its a water snake not a CM. Yall live with them so you know the difference.

If you are from west of 35 and it doesn't have a blue belly or isn't a bull snake and its in the water, and has a nasty temper its a WM. Good snakes in west tx are playful snakes, that eat other snakes

I did the same thing, i'm with you now. I go back to my previous statement and say one less water moccisan!!! Prove me wrong..
It's not a "Pit viper". no triangular head, too long and skinny. Banded water snake.

Also, cottonmouths, like all pit vipers including rattlesnakes and copperheads (but not coral snakes), have vertical pupils like cat eyes.

Look'em in the eye before you shoot'em

Yeah not gonna happen, if I can tell what their eyes look like they are way to darn close.

Largest WM I have ever killed or seen. Yes, I looked at his eyes (after he was dead) and pulled out his fangs just to make sure. He was a monster of a WM. if you look close, that a 17HMR hole in the back of his head. Last year kill but kept pics since he was the largest I have seen.

Came across a post on another hunting forum about a Cottonhead, which is a cross between a cottonmouth and a copperhead.

They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason! nidea
