So I decided to build a smokehouse to smoke some link sausage that will be made this year. Decided on a 4' x 6' smokehouse that was tall enough for me to stand up in and hang several racks of links. I also wanted the smokehouse somewhat portable so I built it on a skid.

Step 1 - Skid

The skid is build out of 1.5" x 1.5" x 1/4" angle iron and then sits on 4" x 1/4" flat bar that were heated and bent up at 45 degree angles. Also built tow hooks out of some 1/2" hot roll round bar so I could move this thing on a trailer and around the yard. Built some bracks on the sides to bolt the foundation of the smokehouse to the skid as well. For longevity, I also painted the skid with some rust prevenative paint, about 2 thick coats and let it dry.

Step 2 - The foundation

I decided to frame the foundation out of untreated 2" x 4" since I was smoking in it and didnt want any chemicals. The skid and all will be off the ground on paver stones so ground moisture wasnt going to be an issue. I placed the floor joists on 12" centers. I then bolted the foundation to the skid and topped it off with some untreated plywood.

Step 3 - Walls

Next I built all the walls. Since this will be a shed type roof, one wall will be 6" taller than the others so rain will roll off. I placed all the studs on 12" centers. Kinda overkill, but whats a few more bucks. I also wanted the sausage racks to have something to tie into when I eventually mount them as well.

Rear Wall

Front Wall with door

Step 4 - Stand all walls and get them square

As the title says, We stood each wall up, got it level and square and eventually tied them all together.

Thats all for this weekend. Hopefully I can complete the roof and all the metal siding next weekend.

Because that looks like a school AG shop where you are work so are you building it or the kids in class?

No casters, gonna leave it on skids.

Yes, I did build it in my shop during the break. No kids involved. I did get my wife to help me level the walls.

Looking to finish this weekend. Gonna test it out sometime in February and hopefully smoke about 40 lbs of links.

Brandon, let me see what this one costs when I get done. My structures class can do it for the cost of materials. We teach this class each fall.

any updates?

are you insulating the walls?

heat and smoke source?

it would make a sturdy blind if the smoker ideal falls through.

I have a small smoker that Im going to use for a smoke source. Going to run some flexible metallic hose from the smokestack into the side of the smokehouse. I havent engineered anything yet, but Im going for a cold smoke.
