Sitting out deer hunting this morning I had three hogs come in at about 90 yards. Two of them were about 80 pounds and one of them was a sow that was a little bigger. I was carrying my 358 Win with 250 grain Hornadys moving about 2300 fps. I waited on them for a few minutes and had two of them line up with one of the shoats in front. After the shot there pigs running everywhere and they all hit the woods. I went and looked for about 5 min, starting to think that I had missed and then found a blood trail. The shoat made it about 30 yards into the woods, clean hit behind the shoulder on the entrance and NO EXIT WOUND! I know that Hornady softs are not going to over penetrate but I was sure that I could get through one pig at least.

They are real tough! I shoot a 7 mag with 180 grain and sometimes they don't go all the way through

Maybe the shoat acted as a catchers MIT. Were there any skid marks where the slug pushed it?

Shot a good sized (180-200lb) sow at 185 yards this morning as she was moving with my 5.56/62 grain FMJ. Hit her right behind the ear and exited on the opposite side. Dropped dead on the spot. The one before that was a gut shot (hurried my shot) and she made it about 100 yards and no exit.

i don't want to start a bullet debate but if you want to try something different then look into the barnes triple shock tipped rounds. my double came from a 30-06 with federal 165gr triple shock tipped round. it went through the bigger sow (165 lbs) neck hitting the spine and then hit the smaller boar(80 lbs) behind the shoulder. both DRT on the spot at 75 yards.

i have discovered and research shows that a smaller grain in the triple shock opens up faster but still travels through a object without coming apart.

Pigs are tough. Deer are tough. _____ is tough. If the shot does not disrupt their CNS system sufficiently or take out 2 or more legs, then there is a good possibility that the animal will run. That's all there is to it.

Shoot them in the head. Heard many a story of somebody shooting a hog and the hog taking off.

It happens---it's all in bullet placement. Congrats!! I killed 2 in one shot @ 180 yards with a 117 grain .257 Roberts using SSTs.

It's the time spent in God's creation with family and friends making memories that counts.

Had a group come in last night.....I had my LR 308 and privi partizan 150 gr soft points with me. I shot 5 times before they hit the woods and found 3 of them. One was hit twice and the other two just once. The two that were only shot once both exited, one behind the shoulder and the other was a little back. The one that I hit twice had an exit in the neck and the other shot lodged in the off side hide of the rear leg. This with .58 cents per round cheap ammo (probably not that cheap anymore!

I do not think that your .358 Win is going to push a 250 Gr as fast as you may think. Probably more in the 2100 range. I have used the Speer 250 Gr Hot-Core and went through both shoulders of a 230 LB Hog at about 130 yards. And it sure did exit lol. It threw blood 10 feet out and about 3 feet wide. And the Hog just flipped over on impact lol.

The speeds you are talking about are pretty much in the realm of the 35 Whelen of about 2400 FPS.

I have a Newly Built .358 Win on a Savage action with a Shaw 20" long heavy Mag contour barrel with a 1-14 twist. I have not shot jacketed through it as of yet though.

But I will say take a look at the Hornady 200Gr FTX they will not break the bank and have a good BC as well as Expansion. And push them with TAC. smile

If you really just have to use something Heavy I may just have a Cast Bullet of around 290Gr Lyman 358009 that will fit that bill if you would like to try.

Or a Lighter Cast One that is like the RCBS 35-200 but mine is just a bit heavier at about 225 Gr. Which shoot just Dandy. Not fast but with cast you do not need fast. smile

If you look I even posted a target on how it shot. smile

any one ever tried the impossible shot? putting the bullet in the heart & lung area with out hitting a rib? iv'e made a few, 55 gr. fmj not a very good blood trail though, so switching to .55 gr hp.. shot's are fairly close though.. 50 yrds free handed my shot group starts to expand.. with hp's is hoping if shot is not good can get better blood trail for follow up shot.. back

The shot placement on the sow that pafree posted is perfect. About the only thing to do after that is to go get your truck as tracking won't be necessary.

tracking at night where i hunt is really hard because of the heavy brush. i have had good luck with the DRT neck shots. my son on the other hand likes and gets the DRT high right behind the shoulder spine/lung shots.

I was suprised on the loads also. They are out of a box of Double Tap that I was shooting to get some brass for reloading. They are listed at 2475 on the box, I knew there was no way they were doing that. I checked them on the chrono and out of my BLR they were running around 2285-2305. I was shocked. That is why I was more shocked when it didn't exit on the little hog. I didn't dig the bullet out but that is moving pretty good for a 35 cal non-premium soft. I bet it was the size of a fifty cent piece when it finished. I have had the same thing happen with my 35 Whelen when pushing some of the cheaper bullets faster, they really open up because they are not made for those impact velocities.

I got this one at 328 yards. Rock River Arms, .223, Hornady 68 grain Vmax. DRT!

I've shot them from point blank and out to 328 yards, with just about everything. Shot placement is key.

Good luck!
