A Rossi 223 will kill a doe no problem i shot my first deer with one but at the time it was all i could handle i shot it a few weeks before my 6th birthday i couldn't have handled a big gun i still remember shooting a 243 after deer season that i was going to get for my early 7th birthday present and it felt like it kicked pretty hard the deer. I have had the savage Stevens 243 for 8 years now shot 2 or 3 deer a year with it and never lost a deer I've shot several deer around 200 yards with it 1 at 350 and 1 at 500and a large axis buck and several mule deer at about 200 yards all of my rifles have a Nixon prostaff its not a cheap scope but b no means an expensive scope

That old 270 has been the best rifle I have ever used I've bagged tons of deer, hogs, coyote, bobcat, and my best trophy a 340 class bull elk.

A standard size .270 was too big for you at 16?

Little bit more recoil and muzzle past can get in a kids head real quick at that age

A .270 isn't a hard kicker at all.

I would think a 16 year old should be able to handle a 270.

Snack food endorsed by Bill Cosby- or in this case may be coagulated blood from intense trauma? Either are good in the correct circumstance.

I started my killing spree with a winny 70 FW 270, then bounce around and stuck with the 300wm BDL. I shot a lot with a ruger 25/06, 270 BDL, mod 7 youth 243 between taking the plunge

I find that it's usually more than just "junk" guns that are the problem. These seem to be the same kids who've had the least amount, or in some cases none, of range time. And that probably applies to their parents too.

I started with a 30-30, and still hunt with it. But, all my shots are within 50 yards and thick brush. IMO, the 30-30 is the best brush gun. Bullets big and heavy enough not to be effected by brush and has enough knock down power. Now, the last few years I hunted a few times with my FIL, and had shots at deer at 185 and 215. Used the hornady leverevolution rounds and both deer were DRT.
Just my personal experience, and I'm not saying that 30-30 is the best rifle. I just prefer it to a .243 or.223.

I started deer hunting with a Marlin 30-30 and still use it. Using the Leveraction ammo, I feel comfortable up to 200 yards. I do use my Marlin .270 if I feel like my target extends beyond that. I've had one deer run 40 yards after being hit, but all the others went down within 10 years.

If you take the time and try different loads even low end rifles can be accurate.

Went through his several years ago when my son was 9. Bought him a Rossi trifecta 22/20/243. Was sized perfect for him.
Love the .22lr and 20g barrels. Great single shot to learn basics on. Took his first dove with it. He has taken several dove with it. It actually made him a better wing shooter as it forced him to make the single shot count.
However, that .243 would not sight in for nothing. Spent another $150 trying to find ammo it would shoot with any kind of accuracy. Best I could get was a 6" grouping at 50 yards. Forget even hitting the paper at 100. Just a waste of money.

Before I took him deer hunting that same year, I bought him a Wetherby .243 and never looked back.
He will have that Wetherby forever.

most anyway. That Rossi was beyond help. Several factory loads and several more reloads with different powder and bullets and nothing worked, even different scopes.. Didn't take long to get my sons Mossberg dialed in. It shoots handloads and factory equally well.

oh no, not this again.

there is no such thing as a brush bucking bullet. a .30 caliber bullet will be deflected if it hits a limb or twig.

btw.... a .243 has more energy at 100 yards with a 100 grain bullet than a .30-30 does with a 150 grain

When I was a kid:

1. We didn't have air conditioning in our house or car.
2. We had a 13" black & white tv.
3. It took an hour to bake a potato.
4. The closest thing we had to an electronic game was an Etch-A-Sketch.

And on and on and on. The absolute worst argument for something is that's it worked a long time ago. The worst advice is advice that wasn't asked for. Personally, I don't understand how someone can indict a high powered rifle as inadequate but consider an arrow perfectly fine. While I doubt it was your intent, your post comes off like the current government. The public isn't responsible enough to take care of itself; only the government knows what's best for us.

And BTW, I started deer hunting with a 30-30 too when I was 12 years old. As a matter of fact, I still have the rifle 46 years later.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

I think the 30-30 is an awesome weapon when compared to a bow and arrow..
