did anyone think that the tree might have been dead when they harvested it? I wouldn't jump to conclusions....do they have oil pipelines in that area????

When I see that picture, I see what should be a testament to what our forefathers were able to accomplish! The woman in that pic would probably whoop most guys arses today without even getting behind on laundry and cooking!

And I'd climb that ladder! I've built a few ladders from scratch when there was nothing else around. Look how they attached the steps-if you ever have to build a ladder, that's how you attach them. Otherwise you'll be on the ground with bits and peices of ladder on top of you and a mouthful of dirt..

At the State fair they always have a house built inside the trunk of a redwood right by one of the entrences to the auto show. The sign out in front said that the part of the trunk used was 150 feet above the ground. Absolutly amazing. I would love to see a tree like that.

Who said it was standing up when they cut it???

Back in the day they used to climb to the top of the tree with ropes and heal spikes and wrap a bundle of dynamite to the top to blow the top off- that where you get the sport of climbing to the top and falling down that you see on the lumber jack competitions.

They would also dig out the base and blow the root ball apart to fall them.

They nailed to the front. If you nail through the sides you succumb to gravity. Sometimes with a lot of pain, sometimes a little. Seen it a few times!

My grandpa Started his logging business when he was 15 years old. 2 years before ww2 started. He came back from the war ,and continued logging up until the mid 80's before i was born. He told me the 3 biggest trees he ever cut were 15' thick. Ya'll will never guess who he contracted all his wood to.
