Nothing wrong with a 5.56, but I prefer a little more lead. Especially with the long range shots.

My S&W M&P .223 is my hog rifle. I normally have others with me but the .223 is what I use 95% of the time. Works great for me.

The smaller the caliber, the smaller the margin for error. I think we'd all agree that there are more effective calibers for larger hogs, but I'm not going to carry around a .50 BMG all day. Every caliber is a compromise. That said, I echo aussiechris's sentiments. If I'm there...and the pig is there...and I'm carrying something even REMOTELY adequate...game on!

I was hunting with a buddy when he shot a small piglet with his 10-22. I heard one shot, then silence. When I showed up he was hiding behind a bush...smart enough to know that he had enough gun for the piglet...but not the 250# sow that was now hunting him, lol. I had more gun and everything worked out ok.

If your gonna pig hunt with an AR, I would recommend the 6.8 SPC. I haven't had one even try to get back up from this round and I've shot plenty with it. I used one in .223 for a while but had several get up or ended up shooting a few more rounds into them to down them. I know shot placement is everything and I'm sure it was my fault most of the time, if its just one pig and you have plenty of time to shoot than the .223 is fine, but when I run into hogs its usually more than 1 and I want to take out as many as possible with the least amount of ammo as possible, the 6.8 gets it done with ease.

Grab some Hornady TAP 75 gr rounds for that .223

You will be amazed at what they can do.

That being said - I like bigger calibers too

I killed eight last week with 55gr fmj's and one with a 9mm pistol.

All I use to hunt hogs with is either a short barreled AR, a pistol in 9mm or 45acp or a 308 if I want to shoot past 300yds or so.

My current favorite hog killer is an AR15 in .458 Socom. That said, I've used the .223 upper on them with good success, and shot them at ranges the .458 couldn't match.

I use an AR .223.

I have killed a bunch with my AR and 60 grain v-max. Some shot behind the shoulder and some in the neck/head.

Got this one just this morning. You can see where the bullet entered just below his right eye. He kicked a little, but I didn't keep wasting bullets. He weight 177 pounds



This boar was 230 pounds and dropped in his tracks from a neck shot at 100 yards.


This one dropped with one shot in the heck from about 100 yards as well.



This one was a little over 200 pounds and hardly twitched at about 75 yards.

Got his 142 pounds sow this morning.

Ehhh it happens, big deal...
I've shot quite a few in the ear with .204 and .223 that dropped and only twitched once or twice. the last two I shot with a 7.62 x 39 one dropped like a rock and the other one did just about like the one in this video. First shot hit him in the neck right behind the jaw, dropped him but lots of kicking and gurgling so, one in the ear, still kicking and now facing me so one between the eyes. He quit kicking but was still breathing and gurgling, so I went to get the truck figuring he give it up while I was gone. When I got back (about 10 min) he was GONE! He had made it into the base of a cedar tree about 15 yds from where he had been and was still breathing so one more round to the base of the skull and he finally gave it up.

The first 2 I ever killed were a 85yds with a 17 HMR both dropped like rocks and barely twitched.

I normally use a 270, but have used 9mm, 223, and even a crappy 22 revolver that I was carrying for rattlesnakes. Really about shot placement.

Looks like swiss cheese to me by some real amateurs. Some people believe the animal deserves a quick kill and others don't mind the torture. What are you gonna do. People will be people. Many on here are very good with a 22 caliber bullet. These guys in the video don't have a clue. I bet they left it there for the vultures to take care of. Amateur hour for sure.

Yeah, I hate that video. It has been around for a while and there isn't anything good about it.

As for caliber size, any round that will punch through and through on a broachside 200 lb boar seems to be sufficient for the task. Proper shooting including placement, trajectory, and penetration are always critical regardless of caliber.

I've killed 2 with my .223 and all they ever did was twitch and kick dirt..

I've shot 3 in the last week with my .223 and I've been pleasantly surprised with the killing power. Been shooting Barnes 55 grain bullets, the gun is bolt action. But shot 2 today that where 250 lbs or close to 300 and dropped them dead at over 100 yards. I like the softer shooting, not as loud gun that the .223 is and like I say, been very happy with the results.

I've shot several hogs behind the ear with a M700 .223. I used 55 gr. V Max.
The results were fantastic with GOOD SHOT PLACEMENT.

With that being said I now own a 8 twist AR that I'm going to varmint hunt with. What loads have you all had success with out of a similar platform?
