Damn, Ive had two of them walk away from my .25-06. Started using my .270 WSM exclusively for hogs. It does the trick, quick.

Looks like a pen raised hog to me. I would rather use something bigger, took a while to put down that hog.

Even a .22 can take down a hog but why??? As a hunter you should always try to make a quick clean kill.

I've shot 'em with everything from a .22 LR to an 8x57 and every one of them kicked and flopped a little. Looks like a good kill to me.

5.56 will work but is it the best choice? NO. It will take a hog down with good shot placement but we cant be perfect every hunt. A larger caliber gives you more room for error in the case of not so great shot placement. All my hunting is for eradication and using Night Vision. Most of the time a 5.56 is fine for the first shot. After that when pigs are running around at 30MPH it will be a lot harder to get that shot placement. A bigger caliber basically gives you a larger target. 5.56 doesn't do this either

I'm a bowhunter and a well placed arrow kills an animal(including pigs) fast and generally by causing massive bleeding and less squaling. Every hobo can shoot a .223 but bowhunting generally requires more skill and training. I killed pigs with everything from slugs, handguns to archery and I totally believe that 223 does not get the job done properly. But with the popularity of .223 shooting platforms such as AR's, of course there will be ton of rambo wannabees who will try them on pigs. BTW I own and love my AR but when I shoot pigs with it I use my 6.8 upper.

every hog I ever shot twitched, it is nothing more than its tender delicious soul exiting the body. That thing was dead after the second shot.

Do we have a clue what load he was shooting? I wouldn't hesitate to send a 223 handload after a hog.

My first AR was a 5.56 and I did shott and drop a lot of hogs but truth be told, I lost more pigs than I care to confess. So, I now shoot my 6.8 SPC and I have yet to have one take more than three steps before it hits the ground DRT!!! I'm all for killing as many of those nasty and distractible things as possible, But the least we can do is make it quick.
My family and I would like to thank every soldier (active or inactive) for their service to this Great Country! Thank You,

Killed 100's of hogs with .223 but when I cant control shot placement I prefer a larger round. I still get emails from a certain someone talking smack about it

Old video. The twitching/grunting isn't an issue. So long as the brain stem is intact, that can proceed.
It isn't just shot placement, but trajectory through the body and penetration. If you have placement and trajectory, but no penetration, you may have problems. If you have placement and penetration, but the trajectory misses all the vitals, you have problems. You need all three.
It may be harder to accomplish with .223, but I can show you a video of a guy shooting a hog "in the head" with .44 mag at close range and the hog not dying. Why? He missed. The hog was flinching from muzzle blast, not bullet impact. Poor shooting helps no caliber.
The shooter in the video was obviously an inexperienced hunter and I have no doubt failed to properly place his shots. Notice the 3rd shot appears to be a miss over the head. On top of that, the guy guiding did the newbie a disservice by tell the hunter to shoot the hog in the head. The head is large and the brain is small. There is a LOT of non-vital head that can be shot on a pig and not shut down the brain.

Like said above, looks and acted like a pen raised hog, also didnt look like 300 lbs.
Hunter dude looks like an idiot.
Of course a 223 will kill a pig, and an elk moose or bear too. Doesn't make it the best choice though. I have shot lots of hogs with a 223, some fall dead, some run into the brush never to be seen again.

I prefer the knockdown I get with .308, but my daughter hunts with .223 and .243 - either of which will get the job done with a well-placed shot.

I say it's better to work on your shooting skills than buy another gun. 223 works great

he is probally useing cheap fmj's, and by the looks of it he didnt aim verry well lol in the shoulder, lungs, bottom jaw i mean come on your 3 feet away . i use my ar to hunt hogs and it works jsut fine right behind the ear and no probs.. if i want to keep the skull for a mount i will go with my 308 of course but it has to be a huge boar for that.

I might as well throw in my 2 cents. As others have done, I've killed them with everything from a bow to a shoulder cannon. Mostly I used such a variety just to make the hunt more fun. Where I hunt, the hogs aren't pressured at all. As a result, you can usually sneak up to 15 or 20 yards on any of them. Except for the bow of course, I shoot every hog in the ear or between the eye and ear. If you can't put a bullet there from 50 feet, you need to take up fishing. A 223 in the ear drops them in their tracks. A 44 in the ear does the same but the concussion often blows their eyeballs out of their heads. Nasty but not necessary. In my situation, I like a 357 sig fmj. I'm not advising anyone else to do the same or agree with me; just works for me in my situation. I won't shoot a hog over 60 feet away. 99% of the fun is the stalk.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

I was sitting in the deer stand yesterday with a AR 5.56/aimpoint micro rds when nine hogs came into the 120 yardX40 yard food plot. Eight never left... Good ammo and shot placement rules the day.

A while ago I posted a story about a neck shot pig running off after appearing to drop. I took a fairly long shot with a green tip.
I bought a box of the 62 grain core lokt ultra. The rifle likes it well enough. I've only killed one pig since then, but WOW what a difference the hunting tip makes.
.223 kills pigs just fine. I think the problem most people have with .223 is probably Geneva Convention compliant ammunition.
