Nope. Never too early to teach a young man about management.

well i'll teach you something about managment.

that deer is 4 1/2 years old. and still an 8 point. That deer needs to be shot.

he is gonna top out at about 115" max, and that isn't good breeding stock.

To the OP:

that deer is mature, who cares what it scores. Your son won't.

I would have died to kill a buck that good when I started hunting

In my opinion, a great shooter buck for an 8 yr old kid!
Might even be worthy of a shoulder mount if it's his first good buck.
Gook Luck!!

I say let your boy shoot him if he gets the chance, heck of nice deer for a 8 year old kid to take as his first buck.

What's more important, what a deer will score, or spending time with your son and experiencing the taking of his first buck?

well your telling him to teach his kid about proper management by telling him to let a 4 year old 8 point walk.

not everyone shoots 8 points as culls. Can't teach management based off of where you hunt. Down south we shoot all 8 points after 4 years but in hill country an 8 point is never considered a cull. Atleast on our lease. Oh and that is a beatiful deer and a great one for a kiddo.

Agreed, where I hunt there would be nothing left if we culled 8 pts except 7 pts and 6 pts. Going on our 4th year, 400 acres, no deer with more than 8 has ever been seen on camera or in person.

to the OP... That deer looks exactly like my first good buck and hes still on my wall today. Your son will be ecstatic to get him.

Agreed with all that this would be a wonderful deer for the youngster. I should have been more specific on my initial reply. As you have mentioned, there are many variables to base harvest decisions on depending the location and size of the lease and what stage you are in your management program. I did not mean to seem insensitive to the decision that the boy and his father have as to whether to shoot that deer.

Good luck.

Wish my dad would put me on a buck like that when I was 8.

Great deer and good luck to both of you

Not sure where y'all hunt in the hill country, but I'd look for a new lease...

Good looking buck! Especially for an 8 yr old! Good luck to you. I have a weakness for 8 points. Love them 8's!

Im with most of the others, dont believe he will quite go 120. His only flaw, not really flaw but what will keep him from going 130, is his main beam length. He is a stud of an 8pt though and a great deer to get out of the breeding. He will most likely never be more than an 8 at that age. He is mature and is a great example of a nice buck that anyone will be happy to kill. Only thing I dont agree with is an 8 year old getting to kill him? Kind of sets the bar high to beat for a second deer...
With all kidding aside, if my daughter wanted to kill that deer I would do anything possible to get that done. What a buck for anyone to take much less a kid. Good luck....

Let your son shoot him if this is the one he wants.

Won't make 120"

As stated before though, if this is the buck your son wants then let him. You both will never forget it. I am 30 years old and my biggest buck is a 96" 8pt that I got when I was 13. Never forget that hunt and the shoulder mount is a never ending memory of it even though it has the neck of a doe bang

Who gives a rats a## what it will score. That is a very good buck. I would venture to say that the majority of people on this forum have never taken a deer that good. Good luck with your son getting him. Oh and is he an 8 or 7 point?

Score/age won't matter as your son and yourself will remember the hunt for the rest of your lives.
