the .204 is a sizzling little round, but i still like the .22-250. both will drop any varmint that walks, the .22-250 with a 55 grain bullet drifts less, plus i like the comfort of knowing that if i have to i can shoot a deer with the .22-250, which i wouldn't try with a .204 unless its a doe at under 80 yards with a head shot.
but if i were a long range coyote hunter, the .204 would be hard to beat
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

.204 will drift less than .224 any day.

And what do you base that theory on? A 40 grain 22-250 starts out about the same as a 32 grain 204. All things being equal, the heavier the projectile, the less it is affected by a crosswind. If you have something to the contrary please share it with us.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.

I would recomend the 22-250 too. It is not to big if you use the right ammo. Just don't use hollow points, they explode and tear everything up. Light soft point ammo will work. You want it to go through fast without having time to expand.

53 grain barnes tsx's for hogs and deer! 40 grain ballistic tips for varmints! the barnes at around 3700 f.p.s. while the ballistic tips close to 4000 f.p.s. Thats all you need in Texas!!!

I have had both. I no longer have the 204. It is a great round, but it is expensive and I dunno, just did not do it for me. The 22-250 will do almost ANYTHING in Texas. It is a great varmint rifle and with the size of most of our White Tail and Super deer, antelope rifle. I reloaded for the 204 and had fun with it, the cost and more of dedicated varmint gun moved it away from my favorite list and into the sale rack in about a year.
Thanks and Gig'em

22-250 is a better all around gun. I love the 204 though. Hard choice. Stricly varmints...204, all game in Texas...22-250
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

Nosler makes a 22 cal 60 gr partition if you do any handloading, I'm shooting 55 gr ballistic tips in mine. If any one has shot the 60 gr partition I would be interested in how it shoots.
22-250 for me, you can't beat it.

I did alot of r&d on the 22-250 these past two years. me and a friend both shoot it. we tried all the possible deer bullets, barnes-x and tsx triple shocks, nosler partitions, trophy bonded bear claw. the barnes tsx and nosler partition were both excellent! both pretty accurate great penetration. both broke the shoulders on the way out! at around 150 yards. the barnes-x and the bear claws the same but kind of poor accuracy. another friend of ours swears by his sierra 55 grain soft point boattail gamekings those are handloaded only. he says every powder he has used has given him excellent accuracy with great penetration..hope this helped somewhat if you have any more questions let me know? just pm

I've tried the Federal 60gr. partitions in my 22-250. My Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA doesn't particularly like the longer, heavier bullets. Best I could get out of them was 1" groups, vs. 1/4" groups with the ballistic tips.
I did shoulder shoot a couple of big boars with the partitions a couple of weeks ago and dropped both of them in there tracks (250lbs at 90 yards and 300lbs at 204 yards). Neither bullet exited but apparently it did a great job. You certainly would not get even close to similar results with the ballistic tips.
If your gun will stabilize the 60gr partitions, or if you can give a little on accuracy, I think that you would have a great round for Texas hunting.

This has been hashed out on about every varmint hunting board out there just do some research. Both are great rounds but you are comparing apples to oranges. If you are strictly shooting coyote size and smaller animals both will do. I wouldn’t worry about wind drift because if you’re asking this question then you won’t be shooting at any distances that it would matter. While I have taken deer and pigs cleanly w/ a 204 I would not recommend it as they were targets of opportunity. While not knowing you I am going to make the prediction that you won’t be shooting enough that the price of ammo will come into effect. So just ask yourself what you expect the use of this rifle will primarily be. If you want just varmints neither will let you down. If you want a more all around gun the 250

The does were shot for managment reasons and all were shot from the truck in the head. and the hog was just in the wrong place at the wrong time he was shot while taking a drive around the ranch at a little over 300 yrds once in the neck and ran about 40 yrds. It will kill them but there are plenty of better calibers out there.

I stuck a little bitty axis doe about an inch low of the eye as it was looking at me at about 40 yards with a 32 grainer out of my 204. It did the trick, but I decided to skin it all the way down to the nose to see what the bullet did, and was fairly dissapointed. a fragment exited on the other right side of the skull, just under the eye, but I couldn't find any other damage. The skull was still solid, which is the first time I've ever seen that. Even a 223 will usually make them mush. Normally I like the smaller calibers, and think that shot placement is 90% of the battle, but I wouldn't recommend the 204 for anything bigger than a coyote after that experience.
