SKS will do the trick. Lot's of options to upgrade in the future and fun/cheap to shoot for fun.

Big box sporting goods stores have Remingtom SPS 308s for the low $300s with scope. Good for deer/pigs to 300+ yds. Ammo is about as cheap as you can get. You cant go wrong. capt david

The SPS Rem and the Savage both shoot well and have good triggers and are not too hard on the pocket...You can upgrade the SPS by getting a BDL syn stock...and basically have a much higher grade rifle..Cheapest to me is what works right...Doesn't do any good to save a $100 or bucks and not hit what you aim at, or be happy with the product...DD

Bad reputation for breaking and hit and miss on accuracy. If you're going to buy a cheap package rifle like that you'll be much better off with a Savage combo from BassPro or Academy, at the same price point.

If I were starting over buying a primary rifle "on the cheap", I would go with a Tikka T3 Lite stainless in 308.
I found and bought one a few months ago for a friend, and it was a really nice and accurate gun.

Savage 110 in a 270 wsm I agree you can find them in most pawn shops cheap, and they do a good job on either.

Stay far away from a 770 or 710 I second that. I'm a Remington guy but those two models aren't the best idea Remington ever had. If you just want "cheap quality" and something that will double as a tomato stake in the off season, anything Savage will be fine.

I bought a Savage Axis in .308 for a truck gun and the dang thing shoots great.

Stay far away from a 770 or 710 I mostly agree. I bought a 710 back when they first came out. Very accurate, and have killed quite a few deer and pigs with it. But, the little plastic clip that holds the ammo clip in breaks very easily. When it breaks, the clip tends to fall right out on the ground. After having this happen a few times, I quit bothering to fix it, and now just use packing tape to hold the ammo clip in. Ugly, but it works. The bolt also doesn't slide nicely - due to the materials, or maybe the silicon that's applied at the factory, there is considerable friction. I hear both problems were fixed on the 770, but haven't played with one personally. Do I wish I had gotten something better? Yes. Do I plan to replace it any time soon? Nope - it works, and it is paid for.

I would say find a used 30-30 in a pawn shop, a savage axis or a used model 110 is cheap, marlins are not bad, stevens but what do you call cheap? I can say I have bought cheap in price and gotten cheap in gun. I started to spend a little more and gotten a lot more out of the gun. Spend a little here saves you a lot later.

Nope - it works, and it is paid for. I bought a NIB 770 in .270 for $120. Shoots great. Bolt lacks a little smoothness. Is it as nice as a cuatom rifle? Or even as nice as a 700? Nope. Does it kill stuff? Yep.

Only reason I bought it was price. And to disprove the lies spread here and elsewhere. Most people have never shot one, much less owned one.

I saw some good reviews of the Mossberg ATR 100s.
