SKS will do the trick. Lot's of options to upgrade in the future and fun/cheap to shoot for fun.

Big box sporting goods stores have Remingtom SPS 308s for the low $300s with scope. Good for deer/pigs to 300+ yds. Ammo is about as cheap as you can get. You cant go wrong. capt david

Re: best and cheapest rifle for deer/pigs - 12/28/11 01:12 PM

The SPS Rem and the Savage both shoot well and have good triggers
and are not too hard on the pocket...You can upgrade the SPS by
getting a BDL syn stock...and basically have a much higher grade
rifle..Cheapest to me is what works right...Doesn't do any good
to save a $100 or bucks and not hit what you aim at, or be happy
with the product...DD

Stay away fom the Rem 770's. Bad reputation for breaking and hit and miss on accuracy.

If you're going to buy a cheap package rifle like that you'll be much better off with a Savage combo from BassPro or Academy, at the same price point.

Re: best and cheapest rifle for deer/pigs - 12/28/11 02:40 PM

If I were starting over buying a primary rifle "on the cheap", I would go with a Tikka T3 Lite stainless in 308.

I found and bought one a few months ago for a friend, and it was a really nice and accurate gun.

I second that. I'm a Remington guy but those two models aren't the best idea Remington ever had.

If you just want "cheap quality" and something that will double as a tomato stake in the off season, anything Savage will be fine. eeks333

I mostly agree. I bought a 710 back when they first came out. Very accurate, and have killed quite a few deer and pigs with it. But, the little plastic clip that holds the ammo clip in breaks very easily. When it breaks, the clip tends to fall right out on the ground. After having this happen a few times, I quit bothering to fix it, and now just use packing tape to hold the ammo clip in. Ugly, but it works. The bolt also doesn't slide nicely - due to the materials, or maybe the silicon that's applied at the factory, there is considerable friction. I hear both problems were fixed on the 770, but haven't played with one personally.

Do I wish I had gotten something better? Yes. Do I plan to replace it any time soon? Nope - it works, and it is paid for.

I would say find a used 30-30 in a pawn shop, a savage axis or a used model 110 is cheap, marlins are not bad, stevens but what do you call cheap? I can say I have bought cheap in price and gotten cheap in gun. I started to spend a little more and gotten a lot more out of the gun. Spend a little here saves you a lot later.

I bought a NIB 770 in .270 for $120. Shoots great. Bolt lacks a little smoothness. Is it as nice as a cuatom rifle? Or even as nice as a 700? Nope. Does it kill stuff? Yep.

I would buy one at 120 for a new one also but thats about the only way. isnt the bolt plastic? or some other main important part

Only reason I bought it was price. And to disprove the lies spread here and elsewhere. Most people have never shot one, much less owned one.

7.62x54. Buy a rifle for a 100 bucks and shoot cheap. If that's what your after.

Re: best and cheapest rifle for deer/pigs - 01/01/12 11:21 PM

I have a 770 and it works fine. As someone else mentioned, it's not the smoothest action out there - but it was cheap, and as such I have no fear of tearing it up "in the field". Still, listening to some of the banter on this site and others - I decided I'd be "too embarassed" to show up with a 770 so I picked up its big brother - an absolutely stunning 700 with a fluted stainless steel barrel and beautiful engraving on the stock.

Trouble is, the rifle to too pretty to take into the field... elmer So I'm still hunting with the 770...

Actually, this isn't a bad suggestion. I have a few 91/30's and they perform very well on hogs. Mil-surp ammo for them is cheap enough, but is corrosive. Just make sure to clean the rifle well after shooting.

I've got a Mosin as well but from what I've heard the FMJ mil-surp ammo is not effective on hogs. Are you using FMJ on them with success?

I'd be curious how a FMJ round does on a well placed double lung shot on a deer as well.

How do you figure a 25-06 for pigs but to not enough for cats?????
I shoot hogs with .300 win mag and .444 marlin when I am hunting for hogs. I would shoot a cat with 22-250 as long as you hit the vitals he is dead.

Winchester 94. Can double as a home defense rifle and triple if you move into SASS. I believe the 30-30 is underrated. Plus it has light enough recoil for beginning shooters. Ammo is cheap and easy to find, Hornady has new rounds. Last but not least, good investment.

In reading this thread I am wondering if anyone actually read the headline. Good rifle cheap for Deer & PIGS 22, 243, 25-06 would not be my first or second choice for hunting hogs. Stay with something in the 30 caliber range since you are going to be going after hogs. You can finance rifles at alot of gun shops depending on where you live.

.25-06 is probably the ideal pig round. Even if you're shooting green tip 5.56 you'll have exit wounds, .243 and the quarterbores are more than sufficient. Nothing wrong with 30 cal for pigs, of course, especially if you want to take body shots - but the .2xx rounds work just fine...

Re: best and cheapest rifle for deer/pigs - 02/05/12 07:31 PM

If your shooting an 150 lb pig at 100yds and shooting it in the head you use your 243. If you see anything bigger say 250-400 lbs at 100yds or farther you might kill him but you are going to chase him a bit. I personally dont like chasing large wounded hogs up into the woods. Just a personal preferance.

Bought a mossburg 100atr with a scope in 30.06 for my son at academy for $300 and it shoots 1" groups at 100 yards.
Scope is barska and seems to be decent.
Mossburg has the lightning bolt trigger it is like the savage accutrigger and is smooth and light.
Great rifle on a budget in my opinion.
