.270 and Whitetail and 150 yds or less. Shot 2 this season and have been kill shots and ran off. After long track looks like thru and thru shot no expansion. Both shots 110-120 yards.

for deer at 150 yards or less, I pick up a box of 130gr Win Power Points, and a box of 130gr Rem Core Lokts and use whichever shoots best. Bot have been doing a great job on deer for decades. No need for super-bullets in a 270 for whitetails in Tex.

i dont really care for ballistic tips either. im worried about over expansion tho. i loaded 140 ballistic tip for my dad in 7mm. 150 yd shot on mule deer and bullet turned inside out and lodged in hide on far side. i think it would be fine for whitetail tho..

Accubonds are a great alternative to ballistic tips if you like the plastic tips

I've found the Winchester Ballistic Tip ammo to be a little inaccurate in my guns. I like the Hornady red tipped rounds though. I think they're varmint rounds.

Were you able to recover either deer and verify that there was little or no expansion? A Ballistic Tip from a .270 should be a bomb at 120 yds. And, it's hard to diagnose a bullet failure without a thorough autopsy, IMO. And, I assume you checked your rifle on a target to make sure it is shooting where you aim it. Scope and action screws are tight? Not flaming, but I am skeptical that a Ballistic Tip in the boiler room of a whitetail failed to bring your deer to bag.

If you are shooting 150 yards or less, theres really no point in spending the extra money for "high performance" rounds like SST's or bonded ballistic point. A 130gr Rem Corelokt is all you need. .

I'm certainly not denying the core lokts and silver tipped bullets have been working great for many decades. Either one of those, or a Sierra Game King or Pro Hunter are extremely effective bullets on medium game at average yardages. I run Gamekings thru my 708 still.
But I'll jump on that Accubond bandwagon too. I have yet to have one stay in an animal, and every one has left a nasty hole when it exited. That's deer and pigs alike. For a premium bullet, I'm sold on them.

if you cant recover a deer shot with a high powered rifle using any , and i mean any bullet hang it up and take up golf. could we modify that statement slightly, to exclude bullets designed for varmints. For example,I'd not be real comfy using say, a 55gr VMax @ 4000fps from my 243, for south Texas trophy whitetails or west Texas mulies.

Got a 9 point this weekend. Range was about 92 yards. .257 Weatherby, 115 ballistic tip. He was dead before he hit the ground. Everything blown up behind shoulder, massive amount of internal damage, bullet ripped through other shoulder and is probably still going. Perfect shot-no chasing.

I seen that exact load smash through a 6 point buck, straight through like butter, I regularly kill them with a 45grer out of a 22 hornet. I take that back it was win 55gr BT factory load not the v max, same thing though

KISS... Keep It Simple Stupid. .270 out to 300yds, not a dang thing wrong with just a plain ol lead core- loc.

KISS... Keep It Simple Stupid. .270 out to 300yds, not a dang thing wrong with just a plain ol lead core- loc. Nor is there anything wrong with a plain ol' Ballistic Tip. I've shot a number of whitetails with the 140 BT/.284 and 100 BT/.257 (and possibly a few hogs too, although I can't recall this for certain). I also made one shot kills on a west Texas aoudad at 285 yds and a Wyoming bighorn ram at 364 yds, both with the 140 BT from a .284 Winchester. On deer and sheep-sized game, I can't imagine a more sudden killer than a Ballistic Tip. Now, for much larger game, I would lean toward a tougher bullet like an Accubond or Partition. Perhaps the OP ran into a poorly-made lot of bullets that failed to expand like BT's are famously known to do. I would call Nosler on their 800 number in Oregon and explain the misfortune. Have the box of ammo and the lot # with you. I would be surprised if Nosler wouldn't send the OP at least 2 boxes in exchange. Nosler might even substitute Accubonds, should the OP desire. Lastly, it never hurts to recheck your rifle and shooting technique. Again, I'm not flaming, having been guilty myself of many faux pas incidents over a half-century of hunting. What was the velocity of that load? I just can't picture a BT not expanding on a whitetail fairly hit at 120 yds from a .270.
