When I meant flatter an 6.5 will buck the wind better than any 277. And. Its no coincedence 6.5's are shot at camp perry vs 277's. Yes its apples and oranges situation but long range trajectory is same where ever u shoot. imo and 2 cents

Im gonna get crazy here, its not the thf koolaid round, it meets your requirement and then some. The best off the shelf ammo choice

308

Yes its boring, but to reach its full potential you can probably find a factory load that works

.270 would be my choice as I have used mine to take WT, Mule Deer in Texas and Canada, and Red Stag in NZ.

When I'm spotlighting deer on Hwy 90 I shoot a 7-08 at deer on the north side of the highway and a .270 to shoot deer on the south side.

I agree with the .243 for shorter range and .25=06 if you are shooting longer distances. Thats about as low as you can go with recoil on a big game rifle.

lol, no you misundestood. the 7mm-08 is a fine round.

I was referring to the fact that they aren't seen in many deer camps south of hwy 90....as in, they haven't caught on.

nothing about the round.

Of the two calibers you asked about, I would go with the .270 without question. I've just never been impressed with the .243. I think it is fine for coyotes, but not really enough for bigger. I'm sure many will disagree with this, but that is my opinion.

Now having said that, what I would recommend to you is a 7mm-08. It has about the same recoil as a .243 and just a slight shade less energy than a .270. recommend using either 140 grain Nosler Balistic Tips or Barnes TTXs.

I live in south Texas and have hunted here all my life. I have found the 308 to be my go to gun in any situation weather it be stretching down a Sendero or in thick brush it has never let me down, my wife shoots a 7-08 and has had terrific luck with this caliber also. Just my .02

ahhhh got ya, ya the lil 7 just now seems to be catching on, it would do better if it was chambered more, kinda like the 260
how is it going to catch on when its only chambered in 2 rifles. thats another good caliber

Your budget will determine your final choice. All of the above
will work. I've cull shot several private So. Texas ranches for
the past 25yrs. with everything from a 338Win Mag down to my 22-
250; I mostly use a 308 W/26in bbls and a 312 Burris Tact. Scope
now. But the varmit rifle kills just as quick if not quicker w/
proper placement. Keep in mind what we use to tell beginning
competitive shooters, "The smallest investment you will make will
be the gun". Budget minded, get a Savage...they all shoot..but
spend some money on your glass....at least as much as the rifle
