Well I am in the market for a new rifle and cant decide between a 243 or 270 I dont really want a bad recoil but I love the 270 our deer are not that big mainly basket racks and my shots are no more than 75yds if thats a factor what have been yalls experience if you have hunted with both any info is greatly appreciated thanks

when you say south texas deer rifle, i envision reaching out across a sendero 250 yards to take a 200 lb 170 inch buck.
you should change the title of this post.
in anycase, the size of the antlers dosen't determine what it takes to knock down a buck.
i would stick with the .270, you'll never be undergunned as far as any deer hunt goes.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Ruger M77 stainless .270win with a leupold 3-9x40
With a good bullet this rifle will kill ANYTHING native to texas, and alot of things that are not native.

Love my .270. It consistently puts meat on the ground out to 400 yards on those long S. Texas senderos.

You said recoil is an issue. The .243 will do the job for you. You could also consider a 7mm-08.

.25-06! Shoots flat, more energy than .243, and still very minor recoil. My favorite WT cartridge, more than enough. I prefer the 110 gr Nosler Accubonds.

25-06 or 7mm-08 are my personal favorites. put a lot of em down with both. Of course, the .270 has never failed me either. Have 2 nice muleys on the wall both 300+ yards with a .270 and neither went over 15 yards.

There's nothing wrong with any of the calibers listed. Get a caliber you think you will shoot well. Since you mention recoil, I would lean towards a 243. With a heavy bullet (80 to 100 grain), it will take anything in Texas with good shot placement. If you want a little more power, then go 270. I love my 270. It's not a lot of recoil, but it is more than a 243 for sure.

A 7mm.08 can be loaded with up to a 140gr bullet or lighter for varmits. The felt recoil is comperable to the 243 and great ballistics. Very flat shooter and you will here very little bad about round. MTC

we don't use those south of 90 Then south of 90 people ain't that smart LOL! i can't remember one in camp other than a kid from florida had one. its a shame, they are terrific guns, just have't caught on. of course, the people i hunt with haven't bought anything new since 1994, so that may be why

im just gonna throw out a 260 rem. you cant beat 6.5mm ballistics. i have one i got a ruger mkII and i love it. my chick whose a weenie shoots it with no problems. and it give you a lil more thump than a 243, shoots flatter than the 270, and hits hard. but a 7-08 is a great round too. this might upset some guys but ive taken more deer and exotics with 224's than anything else 22-250/ 220 swift are hard cal's to beat also. and savage makes all calibers listed with the accu trigger and stock and will keep up with most custom guns. in fact im selling most my customs and replacing them with savages!!!!

at 75 yards, just about anything will do the job. Personally I'd rather be overgunned than undergunned though.

it give you a lil more thump than a 243, shoots flatter than the 270, and hits hard. the .260 is also a great round.....but it does not shoot flatter than a .270

6.5X284,Good to go for 1000yds,milder recoil than the 270, high B.C. bullet 140 Sierra Game Kings! OH! never was a .277 man.150 yds or less, 243 with 100 bullet.200-350 I guess the 270 would be OK. Jeff Foxworth thinks you NEED a Sako 270 Win. short mag.If you knock down a nice one, you will never feel the recoil!
