just curious, but how many people ou there would ever really like to see the hog population eradicated? or substantially eradicated?

only reason i ask, i read an article on mysanantonio.com the other day talking about the woes of hog damage and population. made mention that the federal government was working on a project to mass distribute bait nuggets in areas that would poison hogs.

i understand there's tons of hogs, and that they cause problems, and that the population needs to be substantially harvested to keep them in check. i'm a landowner and a hunter, and have immediate family that are large scale farmers. but i can't say that our lives have been detrimentally effected by hogs. we deal with them. i value them as a hunting resource though.

hogs can be virtually eliminated. we leased on a 700ac property in the hill country where we used to take several hogs. after about two years of extensive harvest and trapping and about 200 dead hogs later, we eventually got toward we saw absolutely no hogs. and i gotta say i missed them once they were gone.

i don't want the federal government dropping any hog poison around my ranch.

whats yalls thoughts?

The most effective method I have ever seen is using a hog trap, but not any ordinary hog trap. You don't want one that is measured in square footage but rather in acreage.... Build a pen about an acre or better in size with a trap door on it similar to what is on normal hog trap, possibly more than one. Provide feed and water so the early trapped hogs can survive, because they will also be an attractant once the process starts. You can literally catch them by the 100's this way. When the traffic slows down shoot them or sell them to a packing plant.....

Hey Erich, Do you know what type of poison is being considered? I ask because I'm wondering if wildlife that may feed on their carcasses will be injured or killed by ingesting it second hand..which begs the question, will it end up in humans?

My first passion is whitetail deer and in east Texas hogs compete for the acorns in the fall with the deer, the deer get shortchanged going into the winter. I plant around 10 acres for the deer, when the acorns are gone the hogs graze the covercrop just like deer, especially the clover that is coming on right now, the deer get shortchanged all the way around if hogs are present. All i have is recreation property, over the fence my neighbors are trying to make a living off the land and the damage cost affects them and if you eat you are involved in agriculture. I am now trapping and selling some hogs and enjoy fooling with them but would rather have a healthy deer herd, and if they keep multipling at the rate they have been we are all going to be negatively affected. Just my 2 cents worth. Gary

What would keep other wildlife from eating this bait?

They claim that they have a feeder that will keep other wildlife and livestock from getting to the poison. I'm calling BS on that deal though. The feeder has a door that a hog will have to lift to get to the poison. When the hog pulls his head back out the door slides down. I bet the first muddy nasty hog that rubs up against it jams the door open, or bends it or leaves the door sitting on one of those great big poison pellets and it don't work.

I think hog eradication is a pipe dream, but hog reduction is possible. Land owners that have hog problems always have the option of letting people dog, or trap, or hunt for free if they feel that the risk of letting people on their place is outweighed by the damage hogs do. If not then I guess they can take care of the hogs themselves or pay someone to do it, or live with the hogs.

I am against poison. I don't think it's a good way to handle the hog problem.

eradication is the key. my dad farms around stamford, north of abiline, and all the farmers around my dad have stopped growing maize and other crops like it due to fact that hogs totally destroy the crops. so i just got a bunch of cotten around me so now the dove hunting in my particular area is not as good as there are no grain crops for birds to feed.
