Ok guys I have been racking my brain for awhile about what AR caliber to buy I was almost set on the 6.8 but ammo is way to high. I think I have finally made up my mind on a 308 caliber one some ammo isnt too expensive and its a big enough round for hogs deer etc... Now I am looking for one thats not too terribly expensive and shoots accurately any opinions?

7.62x39 is very cheap and can get good hunting ammo or just 5.56 with a 70g bullet

DPMS or Bushmaster Ar-10's both shot MOA with factory Ammunition and won't break the bank either, if you want to spend a little more the Rock River .308's are awesome as well.

DPMS LR 308 is a good start. You can get them under $1k and there are all kinds of aftermerket parts coming out for them nearly daily. Heck its getting to be where you can build you an awesome upper and just slap it on a complete lower like the 15 now !! Ive built several around Shilen barrels that have been extremely accurate and wont break the bank !

What's the cost of 308 ammo, $14 a box or so? 6.8 is $15 a box so it's only 5 cents a round more. I've never shot one of the .308 AR's but I can shoot my 6.8 and watch the hole appear in the target through the scope. Recoil is almost non existent.

I have found ammo for the 308 for 8-9 dollars a box for soft points and fmj's if the 6.8 ammo wasnt so expensive and had more variety I would definately get one.

308 hunting ammo is the same as 6.8, and 308 practice ammo is 8 a box or so. 308 AR's are awesome.

what about barrel length? if your shots are under 100 yards then do you need longer than a 16 inch barrel? i have seen some come in 18, 20 and 22 inch barrels. is there a ratio?

I, would get a 16 inch, unless I was shooting to 1k yards.

Well if ammo price is a concern, i'd probably just get one in 5.56mm.

I bought a DPMS LR 308B which is the 18" version. The best i have shot with it is a .12 moa with Hornady Amax 168. I can't tell you how many pigs i have smoked with this thing. My go to rifle on every trip to the lease. one day as i stepped out of the camper i saw some pigs entering the wheat field......shot 18 times and killed 7! It is sweet!

I just traded an AR15 (used) for an Armalite AR10 Carbine (new). It doesn't have the greatest accuracy rating compared to a few other higher end Armalite's, but here shortly I will be replacing the barrel with a Noveske more than likely. It still gets the job done though!

I don't rifle hunt much anymore, but when I do I shoot my Remington R-25 308. I LOVE this gun!! Remington and DPMS are owned by the same company and they make a heck of a AR rifle.
Get one - you will really like it.
Mathews Z7 Bow for Whitetail and Hogs Remington R-15 .223 REM for predators I also like to "hunt" sporting clays with my Benelli SuperSport!
