I like Winchesters, some like Remmys and some like Savages. You will get a million different answers for your question. A budget of $450 w/scope might be a little tough for a good clean rifle, and if you do find one the scope is going to be a junker.

But I do love the .270, great great grrreeeaaaattttttt caliber.

Have you looked at the Marlin X series? Those start around $300 and then you can get a Redfield or Leupold VXI with the rest of your $$$.

450 takes the winny out so that leaves the 700 adl.

You can up grade things as you go.

Check these guys out in San Antonio. You can email Timothy he handles the online gunsales for the auctions as to what you want and see what he has in-stock or can find you. They are great people to deal with and do business with. I highly reccomend them. I have sold a rifle with them and bought one from them. This is there current inventory on-line.

The savage combo is not a terrible deal....

Sighted a friends in and it shot good... but other then that hated everything else action, feel, balance..ect.

But I hate remi plastic stocks too. smile

Given your budget I think the 700adl .270 is right up your alley
You need to watch the forum though, there are deals on rifles during the summer.

I found a Ruger 77 .270 with a Vari-xII leupold, sling, and box of shells for $425!!! For a coworker that was looking for a first rifle.

I have also used this forum to piece together another rifle for a guy who was looking for a rifle

Remington 700adl .270 used and the stock was a little rough $250
Leupold rifleman 3-9x40 $100 used
Leupold rings and base $15 used

So for $365 he had a decent entry level rifle

p.s. you can get remington ADL 700's new at academy for $350

On that budget I'd go with a Stevens 200 and get a little better scope. Can't shoot em if you can't see em.

Right now, a new ADL is a "best buy". You can still find Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x42 scopes for $229. That would be a great combination for you.

Good Hunting!

Watch the forum and find a good deal on here. Saw a Stevens in 7mm08 with a leupold rifleman scope on this site last week for $325.00, so just be patient and you'll find a good deal here.

Joe
