I have both, and it would depend on what I was going to use it for to make my mind up.

I've been wanting to build a .280 for a while now but in AI form but either are exellent choices for just about anything.

If you don't reload, then do the .308. If you are a handloader then the .280 is the way I would roll. I would probably, punch it AI and let it really sing!

I would do it simply because you dont see one every day..throw a stick and you hit 100 .308's. Not at all to say that the .308 is less of a cartridge, it's an awesome one and I own two. But I do hand load so it would be a good one to have. Ballistics seem to be pretty comparable up to 175 grains as well.

been using a 308 for the last few years great round, and I will always own one
having said that (and I have 270, 25-06, 243, etc) this coming season I am going to hunt with a 280AI, Nosler Trophy grade is on order. Plan to run 140 ABs
270 is a great round, just never did anything for me, the 280AI just seems like an ideal (although in reality, marginal improvement in longer (4-5 hundred yard) ballistics)

I have every cal. .223-270, didn't want to go to shoulder thumping .300, Mule deer and Elk would be the target.

Mule deer and Elk would be the target. Either one, take your pick. I would flip a coin if it were me choosing one or the other. Both will suit you fine. With the 308 you will have heavier bullet choices

They will both do the job fine.
If I had to pick one I'd get the 308 because I prefer a short action over a long action.

If my shots were inside 400 yds I'd go with the 308. Past 400 the heavy 7mm bullets in the 280 with their high ballistic coefficients are simply fantastic. The 280 comes real close to the 7mm Mag.

I got a 700 CDL SF in .280. Awesome gun. Ammo is not too difficult to find. Academy, dicks, cabelas, etc carry them now. I tried 139 gr Hornady SSTs, but gun didnt like them. Moved to 140gr Win. ballistic tips and it loved them. Little recoil to boot.

.308.. short action, cheaper ammo, and available in more types at more stores
Most stores carry 308... only a few around here carry .280
also, i like it when it goes boom and things die... 308 makes that happen pretty
