Last time I had issues with my truck, you guys were spot on in identifying the problem. I need your help again. My truck is randonmly dying on me at low rpm's. It runs great while I'm moving but every now and then dies when I slow down or am at idle, but not all the time. I'm thinking either my fuel injection system needs to be flushed or my throttle body needs to be cleaned. Any advice? Thanks.

What RPM is it idling at? Sounds like you might get your problem fixed with some sea foam or injector cleaner....I personally would prob just adjust the idle for now until I could look at it a little closer

Probably bad gas. All the ethanol in fuel today is heck on engines. I'd run a couple tanks of Sea Foam and the treat each tank with Stabil.

if it is racing up and down at idle before it dies then look for a vacuum leak. check that the intake clamps are tight. no cracks in the intake rubber. check for a dirty air filter. you might need to clean or change the MAS (mass airflow sensor) and also make sure it is plugged in. check the hoses coming from the valve covers to the intake are still plugged in and in good shape.

Pull the air intake tube and see if there's oily residue all around the butterfly in the throttle body. If it's all black and nasty, get a spray can of throttle body\carb cleaner and a nylon bottle brush. Spray the heck out of it, open the butterfly and scrub it on both sides of the plate with the bottle brush and spray off all the residue until it's nice and clean. It'll run like crap when you first start it and you'll probably have to hold the throttle open a bit and rev it pretty good to clean all the excess combustibles out.
If the throttle body looks ok, try spraying all over the intake with the engine idling and listen for the eng. to either lose or gain RPM. If it does, you have a vacuum leak somewhere and can pinpoint it using the carb cleaner. Leaking intake\plenum gaskets are fairly common.

Thanks for all the tips fellas, I do think it is something with the intake. I'm going to try the suggestions you all gave. It's idling at 600-800 rpm's. It drops to below 500 rpm's when it dies. When I go to restart it, it struggles then I goose the throttle and it comes back to life and runs great. As I said before, it only does this sporadically, its not consistent.

I have 4 ford trucks and have the same problem on 3 of them. Willing to bet it is your icv vavle. It is a easy fix, 2 bolts. It is located up top against the firewall. The part is around 145.00. Let me know if this fixes your problem. If this doesn't fix it you can always return it.

I had the same problem on my 5.9 gas 2002 all i had to do was tighten the clamps on the air tube.

I of course learned this after towing it to the shop bang

Ford has very common throttle motor problems on the 5.4. basically the sensors do not communicate correctly. what ends up happening is that you get a voltage spike and it may "stick." The throttle will either close and shut the truck off or it won't completely let off the throttle when you are coasting. swapping the motor out is very easy, although the part is about $400. Have someone that knows Dodge double check it for you. good luck

It's your IAC valve which is your idle air control valve. Injector cleaner is junk, trust me I'm a ford technician. I sell that stuff on jobs all the time and not because it works.
