i have read about souring corn to attract hogs. i am using two five gallon buckets. i put corn in each bucket and added a six pack of the nastiest (even my neighbor wouldn't drink it) beer i could find in and then added water. i put the lids on the buckets and wrapped them in a black tarp and have put them in the sun. it said to leave it for a couple of weeks and mix it every couple of days. my question, the corn soaked up the water, should i add more or just leave it and let it get funky?

Leave it -- you should be fine. Depending on the outside temperature, you don't have to soak it that long....

I usually add more water, or the top layer gets moldy. That stinky water holds a lot of smell, and I pour it in the traps or bait piles too. For me one week in a covered tub with an old skunky beer or 2 does the trick.

Add more water to cover the grain by about 1". Keep it in the sun and it will be good to go. The longer the better but it should be pretty ripe in about 2 weeks. Mine got so funky this summer I had to stay up wind of it or I would gag.

i also read about adding two or three packets of yeast to the mix. do you think it is necessary or is the stuff in the beer do the yeast's job?

yeast just speeds the process a beast as compared to beer. They both work

We always baited hog traps the first day we arrived at the pasture we hunted. Put some corn in the bowl a skunky beer and some water. Being south Tx it was usually warm enough to get it going pretty quick. We always hunted for 6 days and generally caught at least 1 hog during that time. It normally took 2-3 days before we did though. After a couple of years like that, I began mixing it up at home about 1 week before we left. Seemed to have faster action in the traps then since the corn was already fermented pretty good when we got there. It all depends on how hot it gets as to how fast it begins to ferment. Another little thing you can add is jello mix. They like the sweet smell. Hog Wild attractant has a nice berry smell to it and they seem to really come to it too.

True story. We baited the trap one Sat afternoon about 3:30 in the evening and went hunting. Checked the trap the next couple of days both morning and afternoon and no sign of activity. On Wednesday, I woke up and went hunting as usual. Came back to camp about 10:00 and then drove to where the trap was. We had a boar in the trap, about 140 lbs, and he was dead as a hammer. Not sure what killed him but there was no corn to be found in the trap, he had eaten everything. That hog had to have gotten in the trap sometime the night before so he was not in there too terribly long before we checked it. Still don't know what got him unless he dies of an anxiety attack from being in the trap, lol.. Oh well, saved a bullet.

Since the temps are starting to drop, you can put an aquarium heater in your 5 gallon bucket to keep the water/beer warm. I've also tried apple juice instead of beer. It works well, too.

We tried this for awhile ourselves, then found that corn and liquid syrup mix has done really well. It starts with a strong odor and contiues until eatin.

ive used jello mix but i think the hog wild stuff works real well. and have you ever tried diging a hole with post hole diggers put the corn in cover with dirt and put some more corn on top they will stay there till all the corn is gone and will root up till the bottom of the hole to get all the corn!

i searched and found different watt size heaters. do you remember what size you used? 50, 100 or 200 watt?

you can do either one but for some reason the coons stay away from our soured corn but regular corn with jello mix or hog wild on it works good too

YOU CAN USE DIESEL FUEL ON THE CORN AND EVERYTHING BUT PIGS WONT TOUCH IT MAKES IT LAST UNTIL THE PIGS FIND IT. THE PIGS LOVE THE SMELL AND ROLL IN IT TO KEEP THE BUGS OFF.

Problem is : you forgot the milk ! Milk /beer/corn = more hogs than you want. You want to catch them in a trap ..make a small extension to your trap and put a piglet in there..Gar ron tee you results..

formula please. how much milk + how much beer and type + corn = fat pig with a tummy ache sitting in my trap. how long do you bake it in the sun.

curiosity got the best of me last night. i opened my two buckets of corn, 6 pack of skunk beer, 3 packs of yeast and water that have been soaking a week.. the liquid was clear and bubbling over the corn but when i stirred it then a black/brown liquid came to the top. stink was a 3 maybe on my 23 year trauma healthcare professional nose. i did change from the tarp to black heavy duty garbage bags today because they are darker black and might make heat better. temps are forecasted to drop tonight so maybe i can talk my son into digging holes to bury the buckets like KimChi pots this weekend.

the black bags seem to be helping to make more heat and stink. 10 days cooking now and it has the smell of a old truck bed full of beer cans after a rain shower (you know the smell) my son was down wind when i opened the bucket and made him back up. i even had something with claws tear into the bag.
