IMO, flip a coin for the .270 or .308. As far as the .243, I have probably lost 5 or so deer in my lifetime with it and the people I hunt with lost some deer last year with the .243 and .22-250. Guess what....we all shot .270 this year and did not lose any deer this season. What does that tell ya? That y'all practiced more?

I will help you make your decision, I have a extra 270 I will sell you. It is a remington ADL synthetic has had a trigger job and a floated barrel shots well. I'm looking to get a sendero in a 270 for my brother. It has a leupold vx 11 3-9x50. Can go with it, or without it. with 625 without 425. gun and scope are in good shape.

308 for longer shots and bigger animals. The 308 is a more consistent accurate round that is why the majority of competion shotters use the 308 rounds. LMAO!!! thats just all I can say, I do not think any part of this quote is accurate or honest. They both are great rounds, the .308 is a short action and can be more accurate at super long ranges. The .270 is long action and is flatter IMO at certian ranges, like the typical longer shots on an elk. Get what you like however if you chamber a .243 in a .308 it will blow up the case and could damage the throat of your brand new .308. Don't take my word for it. Do the research yourself. I have several friends how do compition shooting all the time and all of them use custom 308. I personly like a 270, but I do not shoot 300 to 600 yrd shots while hunting, nor hunt big game. Deer is the bigest I've hunted. snipershide.com

Both are great and fairly equal. I would avoid the WSMs as ammo is harder to find and more expensive and it will only get worse as time passes. Agree... Try finding WSMs in a small little town...Hell their even hard to find in a big town sometimes... The 308 gets my vote

I like both, but would rather shoot a .270 Win over the .308. No need for heavy bullets to kill an elk either. A heavier bullet is great for shooting long range (500yds +). Since most fo your shots will be under 250yds the .270 Win is the best IMO. I'd recommend a good 130gr soft point bullet (Sierra Game King) for deer and possibly go up to 140gr (Nosler Accubond) for elk. The best grouping ammo is what I'd use all the time though. You and the rifle will need to make that decission though. Good luck and let us know what ya get.

270 shooting old school 130gr silver tips... or a 270wsm reloaded hot w/ 140gr accubonds. Doubt I will ever own another 308. let me rephrase this..... I would like to own a Lazz 308 warbird at some point.

are you a reloader, or are you limited to only factory loads? I'd give .308 the advantage to a reloader because of the massive variety of bullets in that caliber.
I'd give the .270 the advantage in recoil, given similar rifles. The advantage goes back to the .308 for intrinsic accuracy and the short action. But the .270 gets nostalgia points.
But another consideration is the platform. What rifles are you looking at? Is your favorite choice of rifle available in both of these calibers?
so, what is most important to YOU?

There is probably a reason that a lot of snipers use 308, but I'm not a sniper and won't be dropping any deer at 800 yds so I'd flip a coin.

I was looking at a Tikka or maybe a Ruger. What ever I get a good deal on. I have a Tikka in a .243 that I love so I am partial to Tikka.
I thought that a .308 would have less recoil than a .270. It is not much difference though

In general, .270 cartridges have lighter bullets, decreasing recoil and .308s in general have faster powders in their shorter cases, which increases felt recoil. You're right though, it's not much difference. I should have said a 'slight' advantage to the .270; but then any advantage between these two cartridges is going to be slight.

The .308 all the way.
Both are great, but as stated, nobody uses a .270 as a sniper gun. The .308 is pretty much the standard.

The 308 gets my vote My son shoots a 270 WSM and the rounds have been easier to find lately and they are making more of a variety, now. But having said that they are not as plentiful as the 270 or 308 rounds.

wigeon, Where are you located? I have a Tikka T3 Lite with Leupold scope that is my Deer Gun. You are more than welcome to shoot it at the range to see if you like it.
