Looking for a true pheasant hunt up in Kansas and have never been up there. Have done the canned hunt thing here and now want to do the real thing. Looking for somewhere with good dogs and a pretty nice set up. Can't really afford an "ORVIS Endorsed" type lodge, but do want to stay in a nice, clean place.

Any recomendations you could provide are greatly appreciated.

Please include discriptions of the lodging, guides, dogs, and overall experiences if you have had them.

Thanks! up

Greg,

I have hunted with Greg Wyrick in Haviland a number of years. Greg owns and leases several sections and always has land that has not been hunted at all, or hunted in weeks/months. His setup is not a lodge, but a comfortable farm house with a heated metal barn with foosball, pool table, etc. which is used for a lodge and fun. There are kennels for your dogs.

You can get Greg through directory assistance or I'll post his number when I find it.

He has great dogs (labs and shorthairs) who all know their business. He's the local football coach and will walk you into the ground if you can't shoot. If you can, you'll get a limit in a hurry. His land is CRP but is surrounded by crop circles, so it is good, year in and out, unless there has been a late snow/ice storm that kills the birds. Water and food aren't an issue. Kiowa County is routinely listed as one of the best areas of Kansas.

I think season's over now (could be wrong) but I just saw your post.

Good luck.

Pheasant and quail season in Kansas runs through January 31.

I hunted with Justin Hammond earlier this season and had a great hunt. See my post on this link:

Check out this one if you don't mind being 2 -3 miles south of Kansas:

Chris is a heck of a nice guy and the rates are great. Tell him Dewey said to contact him.

Greg,

a friend of mine runs a bird hunting operation out of Hunter, KS. Most of the guys that come up from Texas usually opt for released birds, but he can put you on some pretty good wild bird hunting as well. Me and a couple other friends usually get together with him and hunt some of his land late in the season. We went last weekend and saw a lot of wild birds, more then I have seen in quite a few years and they haven't been hunted in quite awhile. The birds are really bunched up right now due to the snow.

His lodge was remodeled this spring, so it is clean and looks nice. You might give him a shout and see if that is a route you want to go.
