Well I had a poll about which is better.....now here is the next poll.
I have a Rem 700 ADL .270 and just bought a weatherby vanguard 7mm rem mag, The only scope i have right now is on the .270, should I take the scope off the .270 and shoot the 7 mag?

Stick with the .270. The new gun should get a new scope. Especially if the .270 is a good shooter.

If you are hunting deer, hogs, axis, fallow etc, the 270 will serve you just fine. You don't need a magnum rifle or the recoil it gives out unless you just want to influence friends and forums with bigger numbers. If you have plans or the ability to hunt larger animals the 7MM Mag is a great choice.

If you hunt mostly in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado then either will do the trick. If however you intend going to coastal Alaska, then it would be the 7mm Rem Mag of the two you list, with a 175 Nosler Partition @ around 2900-3000 fps, and leave the 270 at home.
I don't think you should take the scope off the 270, but buy another for the 7mm.
There is no flies on the 270, but the 7mm Rem Mag is a better all round cartridge, for Western North America. It is not too large for deer, but is just right for Elk and Moose, but light for the big bear of Alaska, the 338 Win Mag or 340 Wby Mag would be even better. The 7mm mag will work if you do your part. I hunt everything in Alaska with a 375 H&H bolt rifle with 300 gr Nosler Partitions, or 300gr Swift A-frames, because of all the Brownies where we hunt up there. There isn't anything in Texas that a 243 will not work fine for, except maybe Eland or Nilgai!

if just for TX deer, stay with the .270. I have a 7mag, and I love it, it is just a bit much for TX deer

I voted 7-Mag didn't have to think twice, anything the 270 does the 7-Mag just does better.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

True dat. Voted 7Mag also.
BUT if it means taking the scope off the 270 I'd just use the 270 and wait until I get a scope for the 7mag. No sense in sighting in 2 rifles.

Put a bigger scope on the 7RMg than you have on the 270 to taker advantage of the 75-100 yards more reach of the 7RMg. Compare 270 150gr'ers to 7Rmg 160 gr'ers for Elk distances and energy...as both the 270 160gr'ers & the 7RMg 175 gr'er are not the best long distance choice. No flies on the 7Rmg, especially for longer Texas sized critter shots past 500 yards where the 7RMg really begins to show it's potential over a 270 when bullet weights are only 10 gr's apart and not reflecting any significant differences in energy levels...but if'n it'd been me looking for a 2 gun pairing I'd picked up a 300Wmg instead of the almost a twin to a 270 in the 7RMg.
It seems like I remember studying this and making this decision some 35-40 years ago and don't think anything has changed enough since then to make me change my mind...and I have been running this pairing since the late '60's.
OBTW 270 130gr & 300WMg 165gr'ers AND 270 150gr & 300WMg 180 gr'ers have almost the same flight path/drop at ranges up to 500 yards...so holdover or scope settings can be basically the same. 300WMg 200gr'ers bigtime out perform 7RMg's 175 gr's in flatter flight paths and more impact energy at long ranges especially out past 300 yards like found in the Rockies despite starting out slower...and are THE choice of long range shooters I know or talk to on non dangerous game(along with a 338WMg in 210/225 gr'ers) worldwide. Neither, get a 270 WSM then you get both guns in one with a short action.

Excellent point...and there is not a deer on the planet that will not fall just as fast from a 130gr bullet as he will from a 150gr bullet. BTW, the gentleman did say DEER not elk.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I would have said 300 Weatherby if I was picking the perfect round for deer hunting, but that wasn't one of the choice's. I stand behind the 7-Mag especially if you hand load.

Why not the 30-378? Ammo is too expensive! I had one for awhile so I know all too well!

no question that it's ridiculously expensive! But if HWY_MAN doesn't mind paying $4 per shot for the 300 Weatherby, then $6.50 per shot with the 30-378 shouldn't scare him off, right?

I'd rather shoot the .270. I don't like the recoil pushing the target out of the scope when shooting from a less than ideal rest. I can shoot my .270 off hand and still hold it down. That ain't happenin' with the mag. JMO
