If the barrel isn't pitted and it cycles normal empty it is probably ok. Less broken, extractors, etc which are easily replaceable.

Ive bought alot of my guns from pawn shops. There are good deals to be found. Most of mine come from a buddys shop and he stands behind them. I guess best advice I have is know what their worth and always haggle with em.

I think think most of them are pretty anal about what they buy off people to begin with.

I don't usually go into pawn shops. I was never interested in buying used junk. It might be a good place to find a good used gun though.
back when we used to eat housecats we marinated them in louisiana hot sauce and soy sauce then season them with lemon pepper........then onto the grill slow cooking them 3 hours........excellent folded in tortillas and pico de gallo----Newgulf

Have bought a few from pawn shops. For the most part they were pretty good. One was not very good, but that had nothing to do with the pawn shop. The gun overall (no matter where it was purchased) was a piece of junk. Sold it one year later for less than 1/3 of what I paid at the pawn shop just to get rid of it.

I used to work for a pawn shop. Bring cash. Unless they are buried in it, you'll be able to knock the price down. Every firearm sold we guaranteed to shoot. If it didn't, bring it back within 30 days, and we'd either refund the money, or have it sent out for repair (which would get done irregardless)
My boss at the shop always told me. Come Sept 1st there should not be one shotgun left on the rack. If there is, we are not doing our job.
Same thing come Nov 1st. Shouldn't be any rifles left.
Always thought that was a lil extreme to not have any inventory left, but sell we did and alot of customers got excellent deals.
Good Luck!

Yes, for sure try and deal with cash. I always like walking into these situations with certain amount of cash "visible" and some set aside.
Let's say they're asking $600 for the item. I would walk in there with $550 in my wallet and $50 in my pocket. At some point i will show them my wallet and say this is all i got. That way they feel more obligated to come down to your pprice. If u still want it and they don't budge on their price, at least you know you have the reserve.
I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

The bargin really depends on what they have in it and how long its been on the shelf, nothing more.
Sometimes we think we are doing them a favor and are the only knucklehead interested but that just ain't true.

My one piece of advice if you're buying a shotgun is to check the choke that's in the barrell and make sure it isn't rusted in or stuck.

You are talking about buying a used gun. A pawn shop, a gun show, you neighbor what ever, a used gun is a used gun. I would only stick to popular name branded common or collectable models. Stay away from anything modified or refinished. People tend to sell stuff that doesnt work. What the otherguys said, you have to be a detective for rust. Also look for dark oil stained wood where stock meets receiver.

I've purchased numerous firearms from pawn shops, and have always gotten good deals. I would strongly recommend knowing the value of the gun you're interested in purchasing. Some pawn shops mark the firearms well above market value, and some even mark them close to retail. Knowing the true value of the gun will help you avoid over paying.

I think the best advice is always be cautious whenever buying a used firearms, irregardless of where your purchasing it from.
As other have mentioned, check to insure proper function of the firearms, check to insure the safety works, check for any tell tail signs of abuse, check for rust and pitting in the barrel, check for rust on the outside, check the crown on the muzzle, fit of parts and components. Always have cash and be ready to haggle, the worst that can be said is no. I have sold numerous guns at or under cost because they had been around longer than I had or I was just plain tired of looking at it. My thoughts are if it has been here a week its to long, if its a month it needs to go, If its here come tax time I lost whatever profit was there sell to turn into cash.

No more risk than buying anywhere else used. Pawns shops will also usually run lay away. "Cash out the door?" is the key to success.
