Went dove hunting with a couple guys I know from school and it turns out one of them did not have his license or any interest in picking one up. I didn't not think much of it since I have mine. Told him about the consequences and he didn't seem to care.

My question is, could I have gotten into trouble if a GW stopped us since I was with him. Obviously I will not be hunting with this guy again anyways but was just curious on the rules for this one.

Thanks

You would not have been in trouble, but why hunt with a guy like that? Would have dropped him back at the house if he didn't want to hunt legal.

Occassionally we have to police ourselves, as well as those with us, to do the right thing. Insist your buddy buy the license. The proceeds support our present & future hunting & fishing opportunities.

I did not know he didn't have one till we were all in the field. I would not have let him come if I did. The guy who had gotten us access to the land was pissed and we told him he is not longer welcome on our trips.

Surprised he didn't end that guy's day right there. If it were my land his gun would have been back in it's case or he would have been escorted off. taz

I concur, Gun would have been left locked in the VEH.
I would have NO PART in assisting him in breaking
the Law. Yes Sir, I can, and would be a real A## in
that situation ! OH WELL !
And NOT give it a second thought.

I would have taken his gun and made him go sit in the truck for the remainder of the hunt. Invited guest do not act that way without some form of consequence.

Several years ago I had a "bright" one show up to our place about 11PM the night before opening day of deer season. I had expected that since he had worked that day, we sat around and visited until about 12:30 and someone asked about their license, and I heard the "Oh chit" as he got up and headed to the closest 24 hour Wal-Mart, a good hours drive. Needless to say nobody stayed up for his return.

I had a college friend in Denton who bugged for for a couple of years about taking him hunting and I decided to take him to my buddy's ranch down in Blanco County last year. We got to the Czech Stop to get some kolaches and I mentioned he was finally going to get the oportunity to fill some tags. He looks at me and sys "can't I just use one of our tags?".... I just looked at him, didnt say a word, turned my truck around and took his butt back home. That was his firt and last invite.

I've seen people show up for a drawn hunt at a WMA and not have their licence. Even if you have never done one, you would have to know that it is the first thing they check before you can hunt. Most of the time a GW is standing right there at check in.

I have a friend tell me he unloaded on a herd of deer with his .22 while up at my buddies new inherited farm. Neither of them have been out in the country before and have hunted before. I told them how wrong it was.....but I don't think they will get the message till they get busted. Sad

Thats wrong on so many levels, where to start? If your friend who inherited the place was involved you might tell him that "neighbors" will sometimes call the GW whenever they hear shots. Then do what you have to do.

Well, in my haste to get everything packed this weekend, I ran off and left my license at the house. Decided to hang back at camp and enjoy the nice breeze and a few beverages. Better to not hunt than have the GW show up and make that decision for you!

I think it depends. You can't get in trouble for him not having a license. However, if you have taken game there may be a question of who's is who's. Ie, "Ok, officer I don't have a license but I'm not really hunting and haven't shot anything" may leave the licensed hunter with too many ducks, doves, etc. Probably depends on the warden. I went duck hunting once with three other guys. Three of us were fully licensed and hunting. One guy was running a video camera and did not have a license. We made it back to the truck with three limits of birds. The warden told us that "It didn't look like we were trying to do anything illegal" but the guy not having a license and a bunch of dead birds in the canoe did not look good.

Next time use your cell to call 800-792-4263 and report the poaching in progress. (IMHO that's what your buddy was willing doing) I believe they pay up to $1,000. I guarantee your buddy wouldn't be so flippant about it in the future and you could buy a lot of shells with the reward up
