The Hag say's no thanks are necessary. I do. How many disabled hunters would get to get out of the house and go hunting if just half of the game ranches and deer leases in Texas would find some one with a disability in their area and take them hunting. You would be surprised at the smiles and memories that this would make.

This is a rather lofty ambition, but the truth of the matter is that most outfitters discourage the disabled hunter, either by not offering the necessities required by the disabled or increasing the cost of the package to reflect those requirments.
You cannot blame the outfitters. They are in the business to make a profit, else they would not be there the next year. And face it, disabled need a lot more attention than able bodied folks. That goes for any sport that takes people out to bring back some kind of game, finned, feathered or four footed.
The sad part is the cost of hunts, not only in Texas, but everywhere else too. They are just out of the reach of ordinary, everyday folks. even worse on disabled. Texas is really bad because of the shortage of public land to hunt on. If you do go out to public land there are so many hunters you are liable to get shot. If you are disabled, you'll get run off. Oh well, just have to find another way.
Sorry for the vent.

sw460mag, Welcome to the campfire, If you get the inch to get out or just want to BS, look us up we'll do all we can to help. Maybe fill the freezer with a little Deer meat or hog meat, sometimes just a few rabbits can go a long ways. Sorry to hear about the wife hope she can get fixed up and well soon.

I am going to put my 2 cents in, hope I don't piss anyone off. I remember months ago an outfitter possibly offering some cull and doe hunts on here. He said he had way too many. I suggested that why just not let a few disabled hunters take a chance at these deer. He would be doing himself and the hunters a huge favor. My impression was and still is, it's all about the almighty dollar. I talked to Hwy_Man at the last 2 dove hunts about this. He has graciously donated hunts on his place. Why charge a disabled hunter money for a hunt???? They are disabled, which alot of times means a little or limited income. Now I am sure there are some disabled hunters who can afford them, but I think they are far and few between. These guys, alot of them served our Country. They ask for very little from us, and recieve very little and are all together forgot, and fend for themselves. With that said, I have no property that belongs to me, where I can accomadate them and offer hunts, for free. Mike is a great guy, and that is why I respect him more then most others on this forum. He donated his time and property for these disabled hunters. Money is an envy as all other material wealth. It doesn't take much to make a hunt happen, with disabled hunters. Time and effort are far easier then what they have to endure on a daily basis. I am not asking for pity for them, but don't forget them either. I look forward to meeting these fellas and sharing a campfire. That is the biggest satisfaction I could ask for. JMO, Roy

I have access to a pretty good chunk of land in Brazoria County TX (Alvin). Hogs, Ducks, Doves (normally) Doves are some what non existent due to the rain but we are over ran with Hogs. If any Disabled hunters live in the area and want to shoot a hog let me know. I can definatley set it up.

I am curious and have serious question. This is a couple years out. If one was to open a disabled hunting lease what all would you expect of it. We have house setup for it on the ranch as is. I can build blinds for wheelchair accessability. I have trucks that I can modify to transport.Maybe shootin a pipe dream here but, I'd like to keep the price within the nondisabled hunter range. A nondisabled hunter would be able to go with the disabled hunter, price kept the same, only one gun per pair allowed.

Hello Hunters!
I am a disabled vet in El Paso. I haven't hunted in 30 years, (as a kid up in NY State. I got to TX as fast as I could.) It's just been in the last year that I found that I can shoot a long gun well if it has a pistol grip. I have an AR-15 in .223/5.56, and am shooting fairly well. My gun guy says that he can set me up a larger bore hunting rifle with a pistol grip, if my AR is not enough punch.
I would love to get back into hunting. I'm not wheelchair bound but my balance is not the best. I really like this forum, and will read and relearn alot, maybe planning to hunt next year. Thanks for having me in!
Tim

Welcome brother and thanks for your service.
Pull up a stump and join in. Some great guys here.
.223/5.56, with good shot placement at close range will get you what ever you need in Texas. Don’t worry about your balance – you will find there are a lot of guys here that are off balance a lot of the time. LOL

Thanks for the welcome, dgilbert and James. I've got about 732 questions, but I think that if I keep my mouth shut and do some due diligence, I'll answer at least 487 of those. By all that I've read, Texas is a fine place to hunt, and that's great for me! When I was a kid, I used to sit in the living room under the mounted head of a 10 point whitetail that my dad got, and I'd sure love to dress up my living room like that. Again, thanks for having me in.

Welcome a board Tim, sometimes you'll need waders around here, if Big_Orn stops by, but just shovel out the BS, and start asking the questions. Thanks for your service

Welcome Tim. This is a great forum for physically challenged people to discuss things and get together. My wife says that I'm mentally challenged because I seem to never hear anything she's telling me to do. Jump right in and ask away. There's always someone on here that can dazzle you with BS if they don't know the answer.

I think this is a very good idea. We don't have too many game ranches here in Missouri that does that type of thing. But the Dept of Conservation does have SEVERAL areas that are set up and reserved for hunters / fisherman with physical disabilities. A lot of these areas are set up on COE or state conservation land that is generally either not open or has limited access to that activity.

HWY MAN, sorry I haven't checked in sooner. Yes, I drive. No problem there. My right side is slow/poorly coordinated due to neck injury in a vehicle accident years ago.
My gun guy showed me a 'New England FireArms' single shot survival rifle in .308. It's got a thumbhole just back of the trigger. I think I'll be able to get it later this month, and I'll shoot it for 2 or 3 months, and hogs beware!
I can climb into a stand ok, and I think that by the time I'm ready, I'll have found a good hunting ranch, and by golly, I'll plan a road trip.
I'm subscribed to 'Texas Sporting Journal,' and am reading all I can. Thanks for the welcome.
