I have not planted anything other than oats for a food plot before and I thought maybe there is something better out there. I have seen lots of ads and commercials and there are lots of choices out there evidently. Plow vs. No Plow, clovers, brassica (what the H is that?), turnips (?) etc, etc. I dont want to have to go through the process of trying them all, as I dont have the time or patience for it. How about some recommendations on what has worked for you! I am hunting SW of Abilene, and it is dry most of the year (except for opening week of dove season, when it always rains), and I dont know the soil Ph. I can get it if necessary I guess. Im just looking for something that will give me better results than the oats, without breaking the bank, or my back.

I really haven't found anything in the cereal grain category that works better than oats. I do like to overseed with turnips. Everything likes them. At a feed store, they go for about $1.50 per pound and 10 pounds goes a long way.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Would this mix work in Ozona? I have a buddy getting a late start on his place and short on time.
Thanks, Shawn

I have 180 acres about 9 miles south of Graham in Stephens county. I have tried the expensive food plot stuff, such as Whitetail Clover, etc, but it doesn't work very well in my area due to the dry conditions. Most of the feed stores have a spring mix and a fall mix that has about 5 or 6 different things in them including wheat, cow peas, etc., They seem to work the best in my area where it is drier and they are also a little cheaper. Just talk to your local feed store and ask him about his spring and fall mixes for deer.

Thanks guys, for the help. I will try some of the fall mix as what I have put out already has not come up very well, and this will be "better late than never". Does anyone know of a good feed store in the Dallas area where I can buy this stuff?

We've been planting 7 plots on a place near Aspermont for the last 5 years. Dennis' Farm Store in Denton and Turner Seed in Breckinridge have good info.
One guy on our lease farms west of Lubbock and has been a big help. We have settled on wheat & sweet yellow clover in the fall and iron clay peas in the spring. We've had some luck with brassica & turnips but most years they don't get enough rain. One drawback to iron clay peas is the deer seem to like them best in late Oct thru mid Nov. Sounds great but if you want winter wheat (which lasts through the winter better) you have to plow under your peas to plant it.
Be sure and call your County Extension Agent and find out how to get a soil sample. If your soil is low in certain things you may not have much luck without the right mix of fertilizer.
