Is there anyway to treat and get rid of rust? I loaned my muzzleloader to a friend and when I got it back, there was rust. I've tried everything but to no avail.
I can't believe that we can hit Mars with a little rocket but we can't get rid of rust. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The second part of this is - if I can't get rid of the rust, then what the heck do I do with a rusted rifle? Thanks.

The best tip i got was using a #2 graphite pencil and some gun/mineral oil. Just dip the shapened end of a pencil in the oil and rub real gently. After a bit, wipe and redo.
unfotunately since it has rusted once, then it is more more suceptible to future rust damage. The gun I had rusted, i put in storage with extra oil and then wipe some off before using it the next time.
You can try the coarse to fine grit sand paper method, but that always made me feel uncomfortable. With the pencil and oil, it can be very VERY slow process but it is such a mild abrasive it's near immpossible to mess up.
Good luck.

If it is light surface rust, I normally soak 0000 steel wool in some CLP and lightly rub it away.
