If you had $1000 to spend on a scope/gun setup, that would be really nice. What would you go with? No necessarily caliber (as I know what I want in those regards) but brands and models? What would be really neat and special in that price range?

Weatherby Vanguard with the green synthetic stock $400
Leupold VX-III 4x12x40 $500
Harris Swivel Bipod $100

I know you didn't ask for calibers, but you did say you wanted something "neat and special" so how about a .257 Wby Mag?

Good recomendation and on the caliber too. I've never considered a .257 mag???

I've always stuck with the -06 casings, .270, 25-06 type stuff...

Thompson Encore rifle (additional calibers later), Weaver V-series or Sightron scope.

Might stretch that $1k a bit. But should come in very close.

One of my hunting buddies has a custom rifle in 257 Wby Mag. Really fun gun to shoot. He can shoot 2.5 inch groups at 400 yards with it. My groups with it at 400 are closer to 4 inches. Ammo is a bit pricey, but he reloads so it's not an issue for him.

Savage 10 or 110 depending on caliber.
Burris Fullfield II scope
Leupold Rings and bases
Harris bipod
Rest in ammo

Weatherby Back Country in a standard caliber. 6 3/4 pounds, fluted, etc.!!!
Burris FFII scope.
It will be a hair over $1000, but you'd have a nice setup.

I say get something in a standard caliber because I have a 257 Wby and ammo is getting more expensive and waaaay harder to find.

That is a nice inexpensive set up that I would not worry about taking to the stand with me one bit!

Savage 11FCNS (or 111 FCNS) + Leupold VX-II 4-12x40 AO
$429 at Academy + $449 at opticplanet.com

either way, I would go for a $500 rifle, or less, and get the above mentioned Leupold.

disclaimer: I am a big Leupold fan

Marlin XL7 $300-350 (not shocking to shoot sub moa out of box)

Leupold VX3.

You'll still have a couple hundred to play with.

Yeah... I have heard good things about the savage with the accutriggers being very accurate. I would probably go that route and put a nice Monarch on it. If you had any $$ left over, I would get a smith to do as much to it as he could. The harris bipod is not a bad thing either...

BTW - DO NOT scrimp on the scope mounts and rings. Get some good ones, they're worth their weight in gold.

TXfour, You wont Go wrong with Burris optics. I have 5 now. The 3.5x12 SF XTR is THE BEST $600 range scope I have ever used. Better without question than 2 of my Leupy's, but not as good as S&B, but it is not a $600 scope so I don't think they are comparable.

As for the gun, I gotta go with Vernon above, the Savage for the money drives tacks. Top it with a Burris and get a bi-pod, and you got money left for ammo.
