Son's father-in-law is getting together an 8-10 hunter group for: http://www.harvardhotelandlodge.com/hunting.asp first full week in Dec., actually 4-10 Dec. Anyone have been to this area just WNW of Ft. Davis? Web site shows everything from elk to puma to muleys to whitetail and word-of-mouth says all are taken fairly regularly. Second question, I usually hunt east of Dallas area where my 270 & 30-06 are surely big enough for anything encountered. Having read this site for a couple years, and posted as "oldmortal" - lost my password and never could get it straightened out so just started this new registration, know some of you will say these calibers are overkill for whitetail in east Texas. But, if I get close to a good sized elk, will I have enough gun to take the shot/do the job? I guess also need to ask about bullet weight recommendations, please? Thx in advance.

Welcome back to The Forum. Either the 270 or the 06' will be plenty for an elk. I would go with 150 grain bullets in the 270 and 165 or 180's in the 06'. Some people aren't going to agree with those recommendations, but I have personnally seen a 5x5 bull elk dropped with one shot at 500 yards+ with a 150 grain bullet out of a 270. If you get with in 300 yards of anything you mentioned, either rifle is more than adequate to do the job. Good Luck on your hunt and let us know how you make out.
