This will be my first season hunting, attempting to find a decent spot, at the Justin Hurst WMA in Brazoria Co. I was wondering if anyone would mind just giving me a few pointers with regard to how early I should arrive on Friday evening late (early Sat morn) and what to expect. Also how have the hunts been down there in recent years?
Thanks for any info. Any and all is very helpful!!
Preciate ya.

Never hunted the coast, but those I have talked to about Justin Hurst, formerly Peach Point. They arrive and camp outside the gate Friday afternoon to early evening. Probably why I never hunt the coast wmas, huh.
With that kind of determination due to crowding, I would be very surprised if you get much help posted, but maybe someone will help you out with a pm.
I think a place like that has a large group of in-the-know hunters that regularly hunt it. One almost has to just jump in feet first. Kind of take the first hunt as a learning event to see what is expected, what the ettiquettes of the area are, best ways to hunt it, and with each hunt you will learn more about what the better areas to hunt are, then you will actually have a purpose behind being there Friday afternoon for the next morning's hunt.
Good Luck! and Welcome to the Forum.

Just thought I would take the chance to remind everyone of how the Justin Hurst WMA got it's name. Justin was a Game Warden for TPWD and was gunned down in a shootout in 2007- on his 34th birthday( by a drunk kid who was spotlighting animals from a road) . I had the pleasure of interviewing his wife Amanda on my outdoors show back in June. That area was his favorite place to hunt, he even guided goose/duck hunts while he was in college at A&M. Anyway, sometimes it's important to remember the sacrifices that some individuals make in order to protect the things that we hold sacred. His wife sent me these pics of him and his son Kyle so that I would "know" who we were talking about during the interview. They were taken months before he was killed. Thanks to Justin and his family for his service to the state of Texas and every outdoorsman that enjoys it's resources.

I've hunted it a couple times. Personally, its been hit or miss as far as success. Sometimes we go down there and smack 'em and sometimes we hardly even see 'em.
Generally gets crowded on the "popular" hunting days.

If your going to go on opening weekend you better get there early friday afternoon. Success out there since hurricane Ike has been minimal at best. The hurricane wiped out the vegetation in the 1200 acre unit and that was the best place. They said it will take them 4 years to recupe from the destruction the hurricane did to the grasses.

Thanks for sharing Cable. A firefighter buddy was friends with Justin and they hunted together. Didn't realize his son was only 6 months old.
