When deer or any other animal is “knocked down” the bullet does not physically make them fall it’s their reaction to getting hit that knocks them down. Unless the hit is to the
Central nervous system.

I've seen does hit in the head and upper neck do a complete turn in the air before falling over. Physics tells us this can't happen, but it happens.

I think it has something with the bodies response to the injury before it shuts down. Just like poking your hand on a safety pin, your reaction is to pull your hand away. No physical energy is exchanged. So maybe when we shoot an animal, the breif nanosecond reaction sent to the body is "get away" causing a spin or a jump.

Just a theory,... I've seen the flips and spins and I know it happens despite physics.

Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

i learned to hunt deer with a .243 and never had to track a deer i shot, until my dad upgraded me to a .280,it was then that he said i could shoot for the shoulder and take further shots. the first deer i shot with it (right behind the shoulder) ran on me, did the whole hunch up and hit the ground running. we got him but i thought i had really screwed up. as before when i shot at any game (and it was shot placement neck or head) they dropped like a sack of 150 lb. potato's or i completely missed, but their was never any tracking involved.

Elementary physics says that "knock-down power" is a misnomer. If a bullet emerging from a cartridge were "powerful" enough to "knock down" a deer, it would "knock down" the human (who likely weighs more than the deer) behind the "bullet launcher".

If a bullet hits the CNS system of a deer, it will drop instantly, but it will not be "knocked down".

I cant even begin to tell you how many times I have read that in some magazine, and all I can say is !!!!!!!!!

That doe I shot through both front shoulders with my 444 did a complete sidways flip upon impact!!! I would say 100% without question that would qualify as a knockdown and not some sort of trick that deer knew!!

I once believed that same statement that you made untill I actually saw it with my own eyes!!

Well, you have a right to your opinion, just as I do. I prefer to put my faith in the empirically proven laws of Sir Isaac Newton.

I would suggest that you put a 150 lb sack of potatoes, or something of that weight, on a saw horse, and shoot it with whatever caliber you like and see if it knocks it over.

Now if you move the legs of the sawhorse very close together, putting the sack of whatever in a state of "unstable equilibrium", then even a very small force can knock it over. But IMO, unless the deer happened to be hit at the instant that it was in an unstable position, and the bullet hit the CNS, rendering it unable to adjust itself, then knocking it over would be highly unlikely.

But then, that's my hypothesis... and you have yours...

I wish that doe was still alive and we could ask her what caused her to flip over sideways!

Like I said before, I once belived it could not happen either untill I actually saw it with my own eyes!!

Issac Newton says it cant happen, but my 444 Marlin says it can!!!!

Knockdown Power

Some calibers always seem to flatten game. Here's why.

The Killing Power of Centerfire Hunting Rifles
By Chuck Hawks

One of the most fascinating and controversial subjects gun writers and other hunters need to address is the question of killing power (or stopping power, knockdown power, etc.). For the purposes of this article I am going to use the term "killing power" to represent all of the above.

I may have misunderstood this response, but I still have to ask... Why???
If a bullet coming at 2000 ft lbs hits an unsuspecting deer and does not pass through, all 2000 ft. lbs of energy is transferred to the deer. Why couldn't the energy transferred literally knock the animal down and kill as a result?

Physics- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_laws_of_motion

The projectile is hitting a very small area/part of the animal.

fowlplayr:

For the same reason that when that same bullet was launched from a rifle (at an even higer velocity) it didn't knock over the shooter.

The energy of a bullet is a function of its weight and its velocity, squared. Much of the energy of a bullet, when it enters an animal is consumed in destroying tissue, expansion, and heat.

Whether a bullet can "knock over" an animal is determined by the law of conservation of momentum...that is the momentum before the impact is the same as after the impact. Momentum is different from energy..it's the mass times the velocity (not velocity squared)

The momentum of a 150gr 30/06 bullet is only slightly more than a 90mph fastball...not enough to knock a batter over, but enough to put him on the ground. If the "ball" were smaller and moving faster and hence broke the skin and destroyed the heart/lungs, it would perhaps kill him....but it still would not be enough to "knock him over".

Difference is kinetic enery versus momentum.

would you mind making me some of those rounds?

the problem with most .22-250 shells is they bullets are too soft

i have yet to see any barnes bullets that are too soft!! i don't think any bullet that hold 99 to 100% of their bullet weight too soft!!

I'll throw my .02 in on this one with my experience. This tends to back up what CH posted earlier.
When I was a teen I would go spotlighting rabbits from a tractor. It was my grandads garden (12 AC.) He would buy the .22 high speed ammo and most times we would see 15-20 rabbits and get maybe 3. I knew i was hitting more of them but unless it was a clean head shot they just didn't get the shock force. My grandads gun was a Remington 522 Speedmaster which will shoot all the .22 cal rimfire fodder up to LR. On a whim we switched to shorts. The immediate effect was that almost all hits would bowl the cottontails over like they had been smacked with a 2X4. So in my opinion it is much more about kinetic energy transfer. In many cases bigger and slower has that 2X4 effect. In a lot of cases the shorts would actually kill the rabbit WITHOUT penetrating the skin.
If I remember my John Browning history that was the reason for developing the .45 ACP. It had the 2X4 effect on the enemy that the revolvers of the time just did not posess.

I have been trying to understand this subject for years, and this is probably the best damn explanation that I have ever heard on this subject.... Finally someone that can speak East Texas layman.

fowlplayr:
thank you, Sir. I think East Texas-speak must be pretty close to south Texas-speak.

I'd be honored to have a beer with you sometime, but don't know about philosphizing... philosophy ain't my strong point. As an old slide rule-trained engineer, never could figure out that philosophy stuff!

HupDog Daddy:
Interesting analogy. But IIRC a 22 short fires a 29gr bullet at about 1000 fps. I would guess a cotton tail wieghs about 2 or 3 lbs? To obtain that same ratio with a 120lb deer, you would need a projectile weighing about 3oz. Never tried it, but both barrels of a double barrel 12 gauge at point blank range just might knock down a small (120lbs)man.

You know this could be an interesting little project.
Since no one has of yet done something like this we could come up with the Texas formula. You could assigin points between 0~1000 to any type of game animal. It could be fairly complex system, IE-body weight X leg length X skeletal mass X hide density. Any way you should get the idea here you could start the scale at the common housefly and end it somewhere at the elephant. The toughest animals would get more points.
You could then grade different ammo in the same fashion and assign it points for various features.
The goal would be to see if you could correlate what you know will work to what the formula will tell you would work.
