If you can't get to class this year I was told by a GW you can get a year deferment from any place that sells hunting licenses and you can do this only one time, cost is 10 bucks. My step brother gota ticket on opening morning of dove season. The GW told us this little bit of info. I never ever heard of it before!!

They offer some classes online with a 4 hour in the field course. You may be able to get this one done sooner. Good luck.

How can someone with a felony(non-violent) take the course since they are not allowed to be around firearms? I know someone who has this problem. They asked me and I did not have an answer.

My son's hunter education class did not include any firearms. I don't know of any reason a convicted felon could not take the class to bowhunt (obviously no firearms hunting).

I dont believe the law for felons states one can not be " around " a firearm. A felon/parolee/someone " off" paper may not be in possesion or own a firearm. Unless you fall under the current jurisdiction of the state you should not have a problem attending a hunter safety class. If you do fall under state supervision ask you parole/probation/court appointed supervisor permission prior to attending. Get the permission in writing.

The class I took we shoot skeet, muzzleloaders, and 22's in the field. This was the Grand Prairie Gun Club location years ago. I know someone that took it this year and they BS'ed on a picnic table at White Rock Lake in Dallas and held a BB gun in 30 degree weather for 5 hours. Yuk!

I am old enough that I am not required to have hunter education but how many of you that are required to have it, have been asked for proof when in the field.

Not sure but I think it prints out on your license if you have taken the course.

Anybody know the fine/penalty for getting caught hunting without hunter education? I have a buddy that likes to hog hunt and buys a license each year but has never taken the course. I try to tell him he needs it but just kinda shrugs me off. I'm thinking that letting him know what kinda trouble he could get into would give him a little more encouragement.

Tell him that it's the leading or most common citation issued by TPWD officers.

I believe the fine is somewhere around $300.

There is no set fine. It is up to the JP the citation is turned in to. A class C misdemeanor can be anywhere fron $25-500.

Mine was a online course, followed by a 3 hour class. We just shot a pellet gun at a paper target five times, and took a test. If you can't pass hunters ed you really shouldn't be hunting. 90% of it is commen sence.
