I haven't taken any, much less seen but just a handful, mallards this first part of season. Anybody seeing or killing any greenheads yet? Maybe this cold weather will help out.

Seen two,,shot two...typically the place I have been hunting is not a big mallard hole until late Dec and thru Jan..I have only hunted one place so far, three times....but once the second part of the season gets here I will be hunting a lot in Young Co...and there are quite a few mallards on the places I hunt there.
I have yet to see a pintail..this time last year, I saw 100's of them.....then when we could shoot them, I saw very few.

Got a call from my buddy this afternoon, seems all the rain has forced a tank into a bunch of corn stubble at his farm....been to wet for them to plow it under and the greenheads found it...just like last year.....So, the frying of the bird is on hold until tomorrow afternoon. I am going to go lay down in a flooded field of corn stubble in the morning and wish some greenheads a happy thanksgiving..

I seen 25 on a tank before the rain and 4 tuesday. Which is great for us becouse all I get this time of year are wood ducks, ringnecks and grays. The end of Dec is when we start to see some greenheads.

Shot 3 big green heads saturday and one blue bill. Windy Windy Windy was the protocal for the day. If it blew any harder we'd be in McAllen.

Only shot one this season on 4 hunts. Hen @ that. Unfortunately, didnt hunt this weekend, which I am hearing was a bit better. According to migration data, the mallards as of mid Turkey day were still North of the border

30-40% of our birds in Gustine are mallards. Usually you get 1% down there.

Yes, a couple everytime. Too many gadwalls dancing in my face......I just can't let them get away. So I usually end with a mixed bag.

Went hunting in Arkansas last weekend, There was to much water to keep ducks in one area we onlt shot 2 mallards, the guide was not happy about there being no ducks down yet, they had there first good cold front while I was there.
One of the mallards had a Drake body and a Hen Head, Anyone even seen that?

I posted a picture of opening weekend and I shot a greenhead that was so young it wasn't molted yet. It's the second duck on the left side in the picture. He sure was the ugly duckling that day!

last year when I shot a banded gad.....they told me on the spot where it was banded, the bird before that they didn't...funny.
That is good on the greenheads....we are getting lots of showing up at my NW Texas spot off some part of the Brazos River...finally we have water up there like we used to....cannot wait for December 11th

Last Saturday my hunting partner and I killed 10 ducks. Five were Mallards. We should have limited out. I hate steel shot. I knocked down 3 more and he lost 1. Oh well, that's the rules. We saw a lot of Mallards. We have also seen more Teal this year than in the last 2 years combined. So far the hunting has been excellent for us. It's the best in 4 years.

steel shot is great. it makes you let the birds get CLOSE. also check out the loads that are 1500fps and over. they work great. I havent sailed a birdin 2 years. I hope you arent shooting 4's heheh. shoot 2's or 1's. Good thing about steel, is it doesnt suck feathers into the breast and doesnt tear up a birds like lead or heaven forbid hevishot. If you shoot a wall hanger, itll be less tore up with steel. I just wish they would get reasonable on the price of steel. Why is lead (commodity) twice as expensive as steel(commodity)? I dont get it. Shouldnt steel shot cost less thatn lead shot?

Yea, it has taken me awhile to figure out that the twos work better. I also have been shooting 3 inch shells and that has helped, but it just is in-consistent. All three birds that I lost the other day I knocked the snot out of. I mean the bird flinches and feathers are everywhere. As far as letting them get close, I've always believed in getting them into the decoys. As far as taxidermy goes, I reloaded my own lead shells and used 7 1/2s. That tore them up a whole lot less than 2s. I'm trying all the things you have stated here and it's good to have the feedback. Thanks.

I shoot #2's only when I run out of #3's Not sure why, but saying I shoot 3 1/2 inch #3 sounds good to me.....then I shoot 3 inch #3...but when I do shoot 2 3/4's it is #2
I have shot bismuth, tungsten and hevishot before, box here box there...but when I go goose hunting, I take a box of each for each day and they are the first 30 rounds I shoot...after that, I am $60 in the hole.....and on steel...LOL

We saw a ton of green right before the break, can't wait to get them in this weekend! Bad thing about hunting 2 hours away, tough to scout! But they will be there, welcome back to duck season!

I shoot 3" #6 virtually all the time. I also shoot 3" #4 when my #6 gets low on inventory But, then again, all the birds we have been shooting this year have been inside 20 yards
