I know Montague County can be hit and miss on deer populations. Does anyone hunt in the area northwest of Montague west of 175? Are population numbers decent in this area?

TxDuckman is the one to ask. He hunted that exact area. He doesn't have anything good to say about his old lease.

Just got a lease on Montague/Wise county line approx 1 1/2 miles west of 287 off of TX101. Deer population is looking pretty good. Been seeing a nice thirteen pt with hellacious spread on cam at night with a few good 8 pts. Now if I can get him to stick on property a few more weeks! Hit and miss in that area!

It is very hit and miss in that area. You have to have a lot of cover or don't expect much of course except luck when they move. Where exactly is the lease and how many acres? I am on 1,100 acres in the same area this year but it holds quite a few deer compared to my old pastures. 2 miles away, holds zero deer but if you are the lucky person in the right place at the right time, then you can get a good one like a kid did the year after I moved. Depends on if you want a lot of deer or just luck at one moving through. You'll find out after one year of what you have.
I have seen some awesome deer come from the Wise/Montague line. That is one good looking deer on cam. Now the issue is getting him to move during the day. Figure out his pattern somehow.

I hunt in Montague County, I'm only on 120 acres. I have a set up with a feeder 25 yds from my stand and monitor it with a trail cam. I have regular activity, and have some very nice bucks who frequent my area. They aren't moving a lot during the day right now, but nothing abnormal, they are still in bachelor groups and nocturnal. My farm is in Illinois Bend and right on the Montague County line about 2 miles from the river. Never had a problem with "hit or miss" in my area, been hunting there all my life. You aren't going to have deer on you like you would in southwest Texas, but the river does crazy things to racks on whitetails so I don't mind seeing less to have a chance at something bigger, especially when it's only an hour and half north of Dallas

I have a friend West of Montague who is just adjacent to where the big fire hit. He is now overloaded with deer.
I generally see quite a few on my place but the bigger ones mostly show up at night on my game cams. I took a big bodied one last year. Although the rack was only 9 points and 17 inches wide, he weighed an honest 165 pounds after field dressing. Those sized ones seldom make a mistake but this one was chasing a doe.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

I just got on a lease about 5 miles NW of Saint Jo. Have seen some nice big doe's, and looking forward to getting to my game cam's. I haven't hunted this part of Texas. Always been near Coleman.
